BS degree in biology or life science-related field preferred.

Position Summary

This position is for a year and may be renewed for up to a total of three years.
This individual will serve as the lab coordinator/research technician for the forest functional genomics lab. This lab performs NSF/DOE/USDA-funded research in plant molecular genetics and biotechnology, and trains graduate and undergraduate students as well as postdoctoral scholars in the research pursuit. The position provides support, both managerial and scientific, to the lab personnel and the PI. In addition, this individual is expected to contribute to the scientific productivity of the group by performing independent, directed research, using plant molecular biology, plant transformation, plant physiology and phenotyping techniques

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Knowledge and basic understanding of biological and chemical safety practices. A meticulous attention to detail when handling research materials and routine/recurring techniques. Careful hands, patience, and ability to execute various technical assignments. Ability to understand and apply new and tedious methods in a fast-changing environment. Able to work independently, use good judgment, and trouble-shoot the technical activities. Excellent computer skills for data organization and report preparation are also necessary. Ability to work well in a team and liaison among various project personnel.

Physical Demands

Stand for long periods of time, withstand hot and humid conditions in a greenhouse. Lift 20 pounds. This position works with hazardous chemicals.

Assist in laboratory research that will be used for publications in scientific journals or in grant proposal applications. Duties will include experimental work, interpreting data, summarizing data and assisting with developing reports.

Responsible for purchases and inventory of research supplies and for equipment maintenance, including interacting with salespersons. The individual is also responsible for ensuring biosafety compliance, enforcing cleanliness and other laboratory best practices.
