Accessibility Specialist - Office of Disability Resources

The Office of Disability Resources strives to provide responsive, reasonable accommodations to help our students accomplish their best work.  We are seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Accessibility Specialist.  This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and rewarding work environment.  In this role, you will develop accommodation plans, review documentation, provide direct counseling, and conduct assistive technology evaluations and training for students with disabilities.  This is in support of our strategic goal to reinforce an environment that prioritizes physical health, mental health, and overall wellness as a foundation for lifelong success. 

You will also support all functions of the office as needed, including but not limited to informing staff, students, and families about our services, supporting the volunteer peer note-taking program, and proctoring, scheduling, and delivery of exams.  You should be able to work a flexible schedule as evening hours will be needed for testing center coverage.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Meeting with students to develop and update appropriate accommodations and demonstrate use of online accommodations management system
  • Assisting students, faculty, and staff in implementing approved accommodations and advocating for students’ needs
  • Completing assistive technology evaluations and training to enhance access and productivity for students;
  • Completing case documentation around accommodations and other student contacts;
  • Scheduling, printing, proctoring, and delivering exams;
  • Assisting in recruitment and coordination of volunteer peer note taker program; and
  • Providing outreach and education on disability issues to members of the CMU community.

You should demonstrate:

  • Aptitude in the area of assistive technology evaluation and training, and robust experience in working with individuals from underserved populations and marginalized groups;
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team;
  • Capability to forge and maintain close partnerships with students, faculty, staff, and families;
  • Skill in being highly organized and attentive to detail;
  • Knowledge of changing legal issues as they relate to students with disabilities; and
  • Excellent oral, written, and social communication skills.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, social work, special education or a related field is required; Master’s degree preferred.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • three years’ experience in disability services, counseling, or a similar field required; experience in higher education administration or a role related to student academic life preferred.
  • Proven knowledge of development and disability issues; experience coordinating academic or workplace accommodations for individuals with disabilities, as well as analyzing and interpreting medical records such as neuropsychological and psycho-educational evaluations, audiological reports, and mental health records preferred.
  • IAAP, RESNA, or other assistive technology certification desired.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and working knowledge of student information systems preferred.
