The Prospect Development and Decision Support (PDDS) team maximizes the value of fundraising data and systems to Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) staff and the University. We offer insight derived from analytics and qualitative research to drive fundraising strategy. We help staff members to work more effectively with data and technology through staff education programs, process and system design services, and change management planning. Working at the individual, team, and organizational level, we help make ARD staff informed, efficient, and successful in their efforts to maximize the University of Chicago’s fundraising and engagement potential.

Job Information

Job Summary:

The Senior Associate Director of Prospect Research is a key leader on the UChicago Prospect Development and Decision Support team, responsible for leading a team focused on improving the University of Chicago’s effectiveness in understanding the financial capacity and philanthropic interests of our alumni, parents, and friends.  Leveraging technology, analytics, and industry resources, the Senior Associate Director designs and implements comprehensive and creative prospect identification strategies, and systematically develops solutions to meet the pool development needs of individual fundraising teams across campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement pool evaluation methodologies that categorize constituents according to their current and projected philanthropic potential.
  • Implement proactive mechanisms for identifying and tracking future philanthropic potential in the constituent pool, including tracking high-growth industries, understanding wealth transfer between generations, and anticipating liquidity events
  • Proactively and creatively use technology to increase the consistency and quality of capacity and interest data available about the constituent base.
  • Streamline efforts to offer relevant, strategic, and individualized resources to aid the fundraising objectives of individual units and teams.
  • Ensure that University leaders have relevant and high-quality research materials to support their work with individual prospects and oversee top quality research support for the Vice President, ARD and University President.
  • Prioritize the needs of teams across campus to ensure that the Prospect Research team’s efforts remain focused on the highest value-added activities. 
  • Design and implement procedures and standards for prospect identification and pool development related processes and products.
  • Oversee the translation of relevant economic context into meaning for individual fundraisers, including the implications of tax policy, market performance, and industry trends. 
  • Design mechanisms to educate staff on relevant economic trends and to collaborate with fundraisers to apply knowledge to prospect strategy.
  • Ensure that teams across campus have the research support they need to fundraise efficiently.
  • Partner with colleagues on the Prospect Management team to develop pool management strategies that maximize fundraising potential in the pool.
  • Partner with colleagues in Analytics to develop and leverage scoring systems and predictive models to efficiently prioritize the constituent pool.
  • Incorporate the best ideas in the industry back into UChicago’s prospecting efforts and develop the best ideas in the industry one step further.
  • Serve as point of contact for key partner offices across campus.
  • In partnership with the Information Engagement team, drive efforts to ensure that data and insight offered by the Prospect Research team is properly interpreted and used.
  • Review, proof and edit colleagues’ documents in accordance with team standards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure continuity and collaboration across the Prospect Research function.
  • Grow the skills, insight, and acumen of team members, ensuring high quality and efficiency from the entire team.
  • Complete capacity ratings and prospect profiles for fundraisers and University leaders as needed.
  • Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of four years of professional work experience in prospect research, market research, financial research, legal research or similar work required.
  • A minimum of two years of leading a project team or managing staff required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience developing and monitoring budgets preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Demonstrated management skills with leadership qualities, including the ability to delegate responsibilities and to execute plans related to team priorities required.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills, high attention to detail and follow-up, and excellent organizational skills required.
  • Exhibit reliance and flexibility in response to changing priorities required.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and tact required.
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University’s Donor Relationship Management System), a Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business. 
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
