Director of Library Services

The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, invites applications for the position of Director of Library Services. The Director reports directly to the Provost of The Citadel College. The Director will provide leadership to and serve as the principal administrator of the Daniel Library, including The Citadel Archives & Museum and the Friends of the Daniel Library organization. He or she will actively promote library resources and services to the college community and lead The Citadel's efforts to promote information literacy throughout the curriculum. The Director is responsible for providing a student-friendly environment, broad and open access to materials, and support for teaching and learning in an effective and efficient manner. She or he will lead The Citadel's efforts to establish, articulate, and implement visionary goals and engage in strategic planning to achieve those goals. The Director will also support equity, diversity, and professional development of all Library staff, serve on college committees, and remain current with technological advances and trends in higher education and academic library operations and services.

The Daniel Library holds more than 170,000 print volumes, over 1.3 million microforms, approximately 240,000 electronic books, and over 360,000 electronic full text journals and video. The Daniel Library serves as an important academic, cultural, and social center for The Citadel campus and the larger Carolina Lowcountry region

The Citadel has an undergraduate student body of about 2,300 students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Another 1,000 students attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening program that offers graduate and professional programs, along with ten undergraduate degree-completion programs. The Library plays an integral part in the educational experience at The Citadel, with Research and Instruction Librarians providing library sessions in all freshman orientation classes, as well as in courses across the curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

The staff of the Daniel Library currently consists of seventeen full-time employees. There are seven full-time professional staff, including Research and Instruction Librarians. There are eight support positions in the Library and two full-time positions in The Archives & Museum. The current budget of the library is $1.8 million, with a collection budget of about $500,000.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

    • A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program
    • A record of fostering teamwork among the staff and good working relations on and off campus.
    • The ability to lead the library's development efforts, including active grant-seeking and fundraising, and a demonstrated ability in managing library budgets.
    • At least seven years of academic library experience, including reference and instruction
    • At least four years of experience working in a supervisory/administrative capacity
    • Experience integrating information literacy skills into the campus-wide curriculum
    • Experience developing the physical space of libraries
    • Appreciation for the importance of a Makerspace
    • Demonstrated leadership in professional development
    • Experience with accreditation issues, including planning and assessment
    • Experience with and appreciation for institutional archives, museums, and/or special collections.
    • Experience in developing library-based programs related to digital collections.
