DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, perform the duties of a watchleader, chemical analyst, and data processor at sea; laboratory chemist and data processor ashore. Duties at sea (for up to 120 days per year at sea) are to organize and oversee watch activities (watchleader), such as preparing and deploying a CTD-rosette system, collect and oversee seawater sample collection and biological sampling with nets and pump systems, and data key entry. Perform analytical tasks at sea such as analyses for chlorophyll, primary production, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and salinity.

Monitor data and metadata collection at sea insuring data quality by performing preliminary processing and analysis. Laboratory tasks at shore will include inventory and ordering of supplies, preparation of reagents and standards for chemical analyses and maintenance of equipment. General laboratory management will include copying, filing, answering the telephone, and maintenance of laboratory and office equipment.

Duties as data processor ashore are to process data collected at sea, merging independent data sets, perform quality control on these and preparing data reports for publications online. Data quality control requires a basic interpretation of data, drawing on experience from the field and from having a strong background in marine science. For example, determining the appropriate CTD salinity to use if the discrete sample was contaminated or lost. Generate and manage data products for distribution and publication online, metadata management, and data archiving.

  • Must be prepared and able to go to sea for 120 days per year.

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of oceanography, chemistry, biology and engineering principles needed for data collection, analysis and quality control. Knowledge of physical oceanography.

  • Demonstrated experience processing oceanographic data using software such as database and queries. Proven knowledge to assess hydrographic data quality and perform quality control.

  • Proven experience in performing data analysis. Ability to carry out chemical and biological analyses at sea and in the laboratory, such as rates of primary production using radioisotopes, chlorophyll a, oxygen (automated Winkler), and salinity.
