ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF DANCE EDUCATION

Position:  We invite applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Dance Education.  We seek an outstanding, full-time faculty member with a record of important contributions to the field of Dance Education through scholarly and artistic accomplishment along with excellent teaching, leadership in dance education programming, and professional service to join a dedicated team of dance educators and allied faculty in other arts and humanities fields.  We will recruit a colleague whose work bridges theory, research and practice to support the development of a new doctoral program in Dance Education.  That program focuses on strengthening the field of Dance Education, deepening the knowledge base of pedagogies and teaching models in the field, creating strong links with other faculty and research in teacher education and related domains of professional practice, and contributing to policy development that will support dance education across the life span.  Rank and tenure status will be designated at the Assistant or Associate Professor level based on prior accomplishment and experience.

Responsibilities:  Candidates should be actively involved and productive in research, experienced in the preparation of dance educators, dedicated to excellent teaching and advisement of graduate students, and committed to important service to the profession.  They must be willing to assume responsibilities of academic administration and planning as part of the professorial role and collaborate actively with colleagues in program development, implementation and evaluation.

Qualifications:  Earned doctorate in Dance Education or closely related field with an excellent record of successful teaching experiences and scholarly contributions to the field of Dance Education, with research related to preK-12 dance education highly preferred, focusing on areas that might include topics such as social justice; human development; curriculum design; history of dance education; embodied learning; dance teacher preparation; dance research methods; and leading partnerships with communities, cultural organizations, dance companies and universities. We seek individuals who have a demonstrated capacity to conceptualize, carry out and publish research with demonstrable impact on Dance Education.  In the domain of teaching we will assess the excellence of candidates through the statement of teaching philosophy in the application letter, along with reviewing syllabi and class evaluations for college-level teaching, preK-12 teaching and public education experience, and other evidence as appropriate.  Familiarity with National Core Arts Standards (NCAS), State Core Arts Standards, and the New York City Department of Education’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance Grades preK-12 is strongly desired for this position.  Finalists will also be asked to supply reference information on students or others whom they have mentored.
