The mission of the Division of University Advancement at NC State is to facilitate communication, internally and externally, and to enhance the image of the university; to provide meaningful programs and service to alumni and friends; to seek service-support participation and ambassadorship from constituents; to build and sustain a strong volunteer leadership network; to raise money from private sources; to manage the collection, investment, and distribution of private gifts and private income for NC State University; to manage an effective alumni and development database and gift system; and to coordinate with the General Administration in areas of government and legislative priorities in Raleigh and Washington, DC.

Essential Job Duties

The University invites applications and nominations for the Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Development (Assistant VC), a position that will report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Development and serve as a member of University Advancement’s senior leadership team.

The Assistant VC is a newly created position that will play a primary role in managing the University’s ongoing Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign. Partnering with the Associate Vice Chancellor and other members of the Advancement leadership team, the Assistant VC will provide vision and leadership for Central Development at the University and Development offices in other Colleges/Units. The Assistant and Associate Vice Chancellor will work closely to manage Annual Giving, Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and Central Major Gifts teams and provide guidance and support for the school- and unit-based fund raising teams. The Assistant VC will work with academic leadership, advancement leadership, key volunteers, and senior development staff to formulate goals for the Central Development groups and with select Colleges/Units to increase overall private support in a strong and decentralized fund raising organization. Funding will be available over the next several years to add additional staff across the Development programs and new positions in Advancement Services to support a growing development program. The Assistant VC will also manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and be accountable for meeting annual goals for activity and results.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Development is responsible for ensuring that the University becomes and remains a leader among its peers in best practices in Annual Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Gift Planning, and Regional Development. The application of industry best practices customized to the unique characteristics of NC State’s decentralized organizational structure will result in ever-increasing levels of private support for the funding priorities of the University.

The Assistant VC will:
•Be instrumental in the management of the University’s Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign, with an established goal of $1.6 Billion.
•Shape and strengthen a maturing and dynamic Development operation by continuing efforts to grow and enhance the momentum built by senior administrators.
•Evaluate the effectiveness of fund raising programs and efforts and drive necessary changes and enhancements to infrastructure and programs.
•Collaborate with university administrators and faculty to understand the programs and priorities within the University and to foster broad, coordinated involvement and cooperation in fund raising for the maximum benefit of the University.
•Manage a modest personal portfolio of major gift prospects.
•Work with University Advancement’s Office of Talent Management to Recruit, hire, inspire, and manage a team of Development professionals, coaching and mentoring them to achieve higher levels of performance.
•Partner with the Associate Vice Chancellor in engagement with members of the Development Committee of the NC State University Foundation.
•Work with the Executive Directors of Central Development units and select Colleges/Units to review and establish accountability measures and leverage systems to track performance against goals.
•Engage with the fund raising teams of all assigned colleges and units to ensure fund raising success and progress toward campaign goals.
•Consult with partners across campus in fund raising initiatives to maximize efforts and productivity

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of successful experience in fund raising, including securing significant major gifts, preferably at a complex, research institution.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Master’s degree.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with comprehensive campaign involvement and experience in more than one of the functional areas of development, including Annual Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Gift Planning, and/or Regional Development.
