The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.

North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.

With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care.

Each year, nearly 22,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from the CVM, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.

Essential Job Duties

The position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and management of equine lameness. The successful candidate will provide both advanced lameness and surgical services (for example, arthroscopy and fracture repair), and will bring innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to complement and enhance existing expertise in the equine orthopedic service. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and teacher, provide state-of-the-art care to patients and clients, build positive and collaborative relationships with referring veterinarians, and further develop the equine orthopedic and lameness caseload. They will be responsible for didactic and clinical teaching of veterinary students, as well as teaching, mentoring, and advising of house officers. The person in this role is expected to be a productive, collegial, and active member of the Equine Orthopedic Service. Participation in collaborative research and contribution to NC State’s national and international outreach is expected.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities include general surgery emergency coverage on 2-3 nights per month as well as one major holiday a year (all major holidays divided amongst faculty), and provision of back-up support for emergency orthopedic cases when on clinic duty.

Minimum Education/Experience

A DVM or equivalent degree and the completion of an American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) approved large animal surgery residency is required.

Departmental Required Skills

Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

ACVS board certification in Large Animal Surgery.

Board certification or eligibility with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) and documented experience in teaching and scholarship are desirable.

Required License or Certification

Candidates must meet requirements for faculty certificate or regular veterinary licensure in North Carolina.
