Job Details
The Grounds and Building Services unit provides campus wide programs and services and support for the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape, 14.6 million square feet of buildings and the 33,000 students and 7,500 faculty and staff that make up the campus population. These programs and services include landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs and services and management of the University’s auto shop and motor fleet. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.
Essential Job DutiesThe Lead Technician will act as a working shop foreman. This position will be required to perform diagnostics and repairs on various types of small, light, medium and heavy duty vehicles and equipment, i.e., weed eaters, mowers, utility vehicles, cars, pickups, dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor trailers, buses, etc. The Lead Technician must have the ability to understand & verify the customer’s vehicle concerns, determine the cause of those concerns and take the necessary corrective action(s) to complete the repair. Determining the cause and making the repair may include, but is not limited to, the use of hand-tools, scanners, specialized diagnostic equipment, manual (physical) inspection, visual inspection, and audible diagnostics. To ensure we provide exceptional customer service, it is essential we confirm all reported issues as being resolved by retesting/re-inspecting the found concern.
The Lead Technician will be responsible for insuring industry service standards and procedures are followed by understanding where and how to obtain the related information.
The Lead Technician will help identify trends that may impact our services by observing the quality of the repair part, the delivery response time, the cost of the part, and the vendor’s customer service.
Position serves in a critical role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations.
Minimum Experience/EducationHigh school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Experience in the field of work related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Departmental Required SkillsMust be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
Experience performing diagnostics and repairs on various types of small, light, medium and heavy duty vehicles and equipment, i.e. weed eaters, mowers, utility vehicles, cars, pickups, dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor trailers, buses, etc.
Basic computer skills required for email communication, leave and other basic job functions.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education- ASE certified
- 8 Years or more of automotive and diesel experience preferred
- Automotive and diesel technology background and education
Must have a valid Vehicle Inspection License.
Valid driver’s license required.
North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
