Northern Arizona University’s School of Communication is conducting a search for an active filmmaker/cinematographer (Fiction) to be hired as an Assistant Professor of Practice or Lecturer in our Creative Media & Film program.

 

This position is teaching-focused, non-tenure eligible, and at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor of Practice. Although renewal is contingent of performance and departmental needs, the position is expected to be continuing, with potential for promotion. The typical teaching load for a lecturer is 4-4. The position will begin August 2019.

Creative Media & Film consists of over 300 majors in three emphasis areas: Documentary, Independent Filmmaking, and Media Studies. The School of Communication is a unit located in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The School of Communication includes major areas in Strategic Communication, Communication Studies, Visual Communication, Photography, Journalism, and Creative Media & Film. The School of Communication has a Master of Arts degree in Communication, including an emphasis in Documentary Studies.

Job Description

 

This position is primarily responsible for teaching production (from a cinematic position) courses in the major—from introductory to advanced, as well as other nonproduction courses, as needed. Such courses may include, among others, Intro to Filmmaking, Cinematic Storytelling, Introduction to Screenwriting, Filmmaking Techniques, Postproduction, Producing Film, Cinematography, Fiction Directing, and Capstone courses. The position is expected to blend a strong model of narrative, experimental, and documentary storytelling within the context of film history, international cinema, and media studies. There may be opportunities to work with graduate students in documentary studies.

 

Additional duties include service to the CMF area, the School of Communication, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the University. There is an expectation of continued film practice at a professional level, but this is primarily a teaching position. Success in the position is dependent upon a demonstrated and continuing connectedness to contemporary filmmaking practices and a keen understanding of such practices within international cinema and media studies.

The department is seeking candidates who will contribute to department efforts to advance programs and teaching and learning.

Minimum Qualifications

 

For Lecturer:

 

  • Master’s degree in a related field to filmmaking, an MFA in filmmaking, or related degree.Two years' teaching experience

Assistant Professor of Practice:

 

  • BA or BS DegreeAt least five years' full-time or equivalent experience as a professional filmmaker/cinematographerTeaching/training experience


Preferred Qualifications

 

  • An MFA in filmmaking or a PhD in cinema studies, or related field Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and student-related responsibilities or evidence of potential teaching effectiveness, which could be indicated by sample syllabi, teaching demonstrations, and/or public talks.Record of extensive professional accomplishment and experience in filmmakingEvidence of success working in a diverse community, faculty, staff, and student environment

Background Information

 

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

 

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
