DepartmentUnder the general supervision of the Director, Digital Content and Engagement, the Digital Designer works to execute creative digital materials, which includes but is not limited to design of new websites, updates and enhancements to existing websites, social media content creation, email template design, digital ad design, animations and general image editing. They are responsible for design standards and brand adherence of all digital properties managed by Digital Creative Services, and for ensuring that University of Toronto Communications owned websites are maintaining best practice for user experience and accessibility.

As an integral part of the Digital Creative Services team, the incumbent is responsible for consulting and guiding other creative team members in best practice for web design, usability and accessibility standards. In addition, the incumbent works closely with website managers, other designers, writers, program managers and program coordinators from across the University to provide guidance and advice on digital best practices. Ability to work closely with a team, provide expertise and guidance, as well as execute work is an integral part of this position.

Campus(MINIMUM)
Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: Four (4) years relevant experience in website design and digital media design. and experience in designing new websites from beginning to end, including developing the user experience and site architecture. Experience providing ongoing digital design support for existing digital properties, including facilitating design refresh updates and regular day-to-day design requirements (i.e. image resizing and web banner design).

Must have experience with email design, working on developing email templates that align with content requirements, responsive email formats and brand standards. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (advanced level in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, InDesign)

Experience designing content for social channels including rich media is an asset. Experience with HTML, CSS and CMS functionalities is an asset with ability to develop and post new design updates on existing CMS’s.


Skills: Demonstrated in-depth understanding of design and graphic principles. Must be comfortable presenting designs to key stakeholders internally and across the University. Demonstrated ability to work closely with project managers and web developers to understand digital project goals and execute design accordingly.

Demonstrated web design skills, including layout, typography, graphic design principles and colour theory. Clear understanding of how design translates to code and formal handover of design to web developers. Deep understanding of website usability and user experience principles. Knowledge and experience applying usability and accessible web design practices. Knowledge of Google Analytics as it applies to website design and on-going maintenance.

Other: Strong written and verbal communications skills; ability to explain technical concepts to laypersons. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work independently and as a team member. Ability to synthesize information from numerous sources. Demonstrated adaptability and ability to pick up new techniques or programs; strong multi-tasking skills; willingness and ability to work with various software and to upgrade web page management skills and technology on an ongoing basis. Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
