Bard College at Simon's RockDean of StudentsBard Academy and Bard College at Simon’s Rock seek an experienced, innovative, and compassionate leader to serve as its Dean of Students. Reporting to the Vice Provost, the Dean of Students is responsible for a broad portfolio of services to support the success of our students.

Bard College at Simon’s Rock is the only four-year college in the United States specifically designed to allow highly motivated adolescents to fully realize their intellectual and creative potential by beginning college immediately after the 10th or 11th grade. For over 50 years, Simon’s Rock has occupied a unique space in the educational landscape, practicing the simple yet radical idea that many students are ready for college before the age of 18. Four years ago, Simon’s Rock opened Bard Academy at Simon's Rock, a two-year high school program for 9th- and 10th- graders on the path to starting college early.

The campus is located on 275 rolling and wooded acres in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the center of the Berkshires and, according to Smithsonian Magazine, “the best small town in America.” Equidistant between New York and Boston, the Berkshires are a site of great natural beauty and numerous outdoor activities, as well as a cultural destination.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and guidance in the creation, analysis, review, and interpretation of student policies and procedures detailed in the Student Handbook.
  • Promote, support, and strengthen the institution’s diversity and inclusion efforts.
  • Enhance the student life experience with innovative programs, services, and activities.
  • Provide direction and intervention for students in crisis and non-crisis including coordinating with the Wellness Center staff, the Title IX Coordinator, and off-campus resources.
  • Manage the Campus Life response to a major crisis and other events impacting students on campus.
  • Oversee the student conduct process and maintain records utilizing our student conduct software, Maxient.
  • Assist with compliance of the Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA, Campus Safe and all college, state, and federal reporting as required that pertain to student conduct matters, along with the Director of Campus Safety, the Director of Title IX, and the Associate Dean of Campus Life.
  • Serve on an on-call rotation with other Campus Life employees in order to respond and assist with incidents and emergencies as they arise.
  • Act as a visible, engaged, and active member of the senior leadership team and in the campus community.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs to develop strategies for promoting student engagement and learning.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and other campus partners.
  • Chair the Student Support Meeting.
  • Supervise a talented, collaborative, and experienced team of professionals including the Associate Dean of Student Life, the Director of the Wellness Center, the Director of Campus Safety, the Director of Housing Operations, and the Director of Campus Activities.
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and provide input into the strategic priorities for Campus Life.
  • Review the current organizational structure, staff functions, and staffing levels for efficiency and effectiveness. Recruit, hire, and train staff as needed.
  • Manage the budgets for Campus Life, Residence Halls, Campus Safety, and the Wellness Center.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional work, with increasing responsibility, in the field of student affairs.
  • Progressive leadership experience in higher education and student affairs.
  • Deep experience and knowledge of current trends in student affairs management.
  • Proven commitment to the academic, emotional, and social development of all students.
  • A successful history of supervising and mentoring staff, enhancing student life on a residential campus, and working effectively across a campus community.
  • Strong organizational, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
