The Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality (CPI) is a nonpartisan research center at Stanford University. The mission of the CPI is to conduct and facilitate research on issues of domestic poverty, mobility, and inequality and to disseminate the results of this research to scholars, policymakers, and the general public. The guiding principle of the Center's work is that research findings should be evidence-based, the result of rigorous scientific inquiry, and communicated clearly and objectively. The CPI supports research by new and established scholars, trains the next generation of scholars and policy analysts, and disseminates the very best research on poverty, mobility, and inequality.

As part of its mission to develop science-based policy on poverty and inequality, the CPI is conducting the first-ever qualitative census. The American Voices Project will talk with 5,000 individuals across the country to understand their successes and struggles, their hopes and dreams, and their ideas about how neighborhoods are faring and how policies are playing out on the ground.

American Voices Project Regional Directors will lead teams of research fellows, oversee field operations, and conduct field research under the guidance of faculty and field leadership. They will supervise teams; provide feedback and evaluation; conduct quality control of interviews, field notes, and recruiting practices; oversee research fellow assignments, schedules, and reporting; coordinate and attend meetings with local organizations and community centers; diagnose and troubleshoot problems that arise in the field; lead training institute classes and activities; and conduct in-depth interviews. Prior field research experience is required.
Responsibilities include*:

  • Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
  • Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
  • Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. * - Other duties will also be assigned To be successful in this position, you will bring:
    • Bachelor's degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science field.
    • Comprehensive understanding of scientific theory and methods.
    • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
    • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
    • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
    • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
    • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work with human study participants.
    • Developing supervisory skills.
    In addition, preferred requirements include:
    • Field research experience and strong leadership or management experience.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skill and strong problem-solving skills.
    • Respect for diverse experiences and backgrounds.

    Though fluency in another language is not required, it can be very beneficial. In particular, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Arabic speakers are encouraged to apply.
