General Description
College of the Sequoias is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time, tenure track, Career Services Counselor position in the Student Services Division beginning August 2019.

College of the Sequoias Community College District serves a diverse community of learners and is a Hispanic Serving Institution. Job Duties
Job duties of the Career Services Counselor will include, but is not limited to the following:
  • Conduct educational, vocational, career and personal counseling appointments as well as student orientation sessions for a diversified community college population.
  • Provide follow-up counseling services to students as stipulated by state and college matriculation guidelines.
  • Use electronic student educational planning and degree audit software to develop/create plans for students.
  • Help students with selection of college major and potential careers.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to on/off campus resources for students.
  • Remain current on new developments relating to programs for students within the California Community College system and University systems.
  • Participate in appropriate counseling staff meetings and professional development.
  • Provide Career Counseling to students both individually and in groups through workshops.
  • Author original website content, training materials, and other career-related pieces.
  • Coordinate and streamline all career related services at COS to improve internal and external relations with all affiliates (counselors, students, faculty, hiring agencies, and the community at large).
  • Administer and interpret nationally recognized career assessment tools, including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and/or the Strong Interest Inventory in a one-to-one counseling session or classroom style and other assessment tools as needed
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the Student Affairs Division (Student Services), academic departments and residential colleges to actively share resources and develop programming
  • Stay current on career development trends, relevant on and off-campus resources, and related technology
  • Teach students how to write a resume, conduct an informational interview, and navigate the world of work, including how to set up a LinkedIn page, career employment services available for students, and utilize the internet for potential employment including how to actively pursue meaningful employment utilizing current technology
  • Program Review, data tracking, and coordination of career exploration/employment services
  • Lead/coordinate events, e.g. Career/Job Fairs, Majors Expos, Internship Fairs, College Night, counselor and faculty training on career development and resources
  • Support the design and implementation of career efforts at the high schools/community agencies
  • Support Counseling courses with career related services
  • Have an understanding of labor market information and trends as well as an awareness of current Chancellor's Office initiatives such as Guided Pathways and the impact of career counseling within these models.
  • Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected.
  • Other responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equality, which is respectful of diversity campus wide
  • Working at Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare, some evenings, and/or weekends as well as additional duties as assigned as specified by the division chair and/or dean of student services.



Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate must meet the following criteria. The degree must be from an institution accredited by the Western Associations of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent:
  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling OR
  • The equivalent AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college.

Desirable Qualifications:
The Hiring Committee also seeks evidence of the following:
  • Certified in the Strong Interest Inventory and/or Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and be able to assess skills and values. Strong Interest Inventory certification, strongly recommended.
  • Minimum of 2 years Community College Counseling and related experiences
  • Computer literate in counseling software such as Assist, DegreeWorks, Banner.
  • Knowledgeable in use of the Internet, computer applications, and data.
  • Knowledge of testing materials and interpretation of career interest, personality, work values and similar career-relevant assessment criteria.
  • Knowledge of requirements for transfer, CTE/vocational, and remedial programs.
  • Ability to participate in a collaborative relationship with students and faculty.
  • Ability to make a positive contribution to the counseling program at College of the Sequoias by the development and/or implementation of special counseling programs or materials.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in working with students and staff.
  • Classroom teaching experience.

College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
