DepartmentThe Department of Student Housing and Residence Life at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) embraces the concept of a learning and living environment which promotes, facilitates, and creates an environment second to none in the learning possibilities for students. The residences at the University of Toronto Scarborough currently comprise of 114 townhouses and 56 apartments accommodating 767 students. Construction of a new state of the art dormitory style residence is currently in the development stages, with anticipated occupancy by September 2023. The new residence which will comprise of 765 beds including a dining hall, meeting, and community spaces will double residence capacity in a unique public private partnership with UTSC having full responsibility for residence and community life.

The Director, Student Housing and Residence Life is responsible for planning and leading all aspects of UTSC's residence life activities, including operations, marketing, financial, technical, programming, and human resources. Utilizing a highly collaborative and consultative approach, the Director works within a model that emphasizes student safety and development in support of personal and academic success. The primary area of accountability is the development and maintenance of community life within residence and the campus community that provides safe vibrant learning spaces, that supports experiential learning opportunities and a platform allowing for an environment that is rich in learning opportunities and proactively supportive of student success. The Director will also provide leadership to cultivate and motivate a residence staff team so as to maintain a strong sense of community life in the residences. Other key areas of accountability include strategic and operational oversight of the property management elements of residences that are under the full management of the university, in collaboration with the Department of Facilities Management; leading the development and improvement of off campus housing support services; and neighbourhood relations.

The Director also liaises with the private partner with respect to the new residence as it becomes, and is operational. During the remaining development phase and construction of the new residence, the Director will also serve on the building committee and work with all relevant parties in the successful development of the new facility.

The Director of Student Housing and is an active team player, and initiator, supporting and collaborating with colleagues within the division of Student Affairs and Services as well as professionals and students across a wide range of other services both on campus and across the entire University.

Campus(Minimum Qualifications)

EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Adult Education, MBA, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum seven (7) years of related leadership experience in student housing/residence, preferably within a post-secondary housing and residence life setting. A demonstrated record of progressively responsible experience in the areas of: leading inclusive teams successfully with high levels of morale and achievement; leading the development and implementation of student programming that enhance the student experience; managing facilities and operations. Strong management experience, preferably in a unionized environment. Sound business acumen, budget development and financial management experience including annual forecasting and multi-year budget projections.

SKILLS: Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and leadership skills. Must be able to manage crises effectively and in a calm manner. Computer literacy including Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint and familiarity with data management systems. Knowledge of automated residence management systems and demonstrated achievement in innovative deployment of technology to improve efficiencies including communications.

OTHER: Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including effective presentation skills, mentoring and team building skills. Must possess sound judgement, tact and diplomacy. Ability to interact effectively with individuals internally and externally in a manner which facilitates cooperation. High degree of political acuity; strong planning, organizational and analytical skills. Well-developed conflict resolution skills. An appreciation of academic values and a demonstrated understanding and commitment to student development. A participative and consultative approach to management. Must be able to work irregular hours to accommodate student requirements and activities.
