Role Title: Faculty - Teaching

Hiring Range: Minimum starting salary $43,776 - Commensurate with experience and corresponding rank in the VCCS.

Job Type: Full-Time (Salaried)

Dental faculty are required to provide instruction, support, assessment, and mentorship to Thomas Nelson Community College’s students, staff and supporting faculty. Dental faculty are required to fully participate in the mission and community of the college. The major emphasis shall be on teaching, by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, clinical sites, field sites, indoors, outdoors, distance learning, individual conferences, and related activities to help the students develop their interests and abilities to the fullest capacity to become better persons, better workers, and better citizens.

Duties and responsibilities

Teaching Load

Teach 15 credit hours per semester, which may include classes at the Hampton or Historic Triangle campuses and/or off-site locations; on-campus and online classes; day, evening, and/or weekend classes. Contribute high levels of energy, engagement, creativity, and leadership to the teaching and learning environment.

Professional Activities and Contributions

Design, develop, and assess curriculum. Serve in the role of a faculty mentor for students, and contribute to College governance and to service. Collaborate in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance. Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further education, and/or scholarship.

Office Hours

To promote the availability of faculty to work with individual students, all full-time faculty members are required to post on or near their office doors a minimum of 10 hours per week as office hours to be available to work with students on their individual academic and occupational problems

Additional Activities/ Temporary Assignment

Additional activities include committee work, student activities, community activities, student advising, and professional activities; e.g. discipline specific initiatives as well as program assessment.  Teaching Faculty may be temporarily assigned non-teaching duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. Completion of an educational program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Clinical practice in dental hygiene experience. Unrestricted license to practice as a dental hygienist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Providers).

Specialized knowledge:

  • Knowledge of dental theory, practice, and trends.
  • Knowledge of current dental curricular content and National and State Education Standards.
  • Knowledge of current dental curriculum.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of dental education program accreditation processes and standards.

Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
  • Be required to use skills competency software.

Abilities

  • Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records.
  • Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback.
  • Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants.
  • Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective collaborations with local healthcare providers, community agencies, and four-year colleges and universities.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in dental hygiene or related field from a regionally accredited institution. Recent teaching experience in a CODA-accredited community college dental hygiene program. Considerable clinical experience administering local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. Experience using electronic medical record software. Experience using instructional technologies, administering computer based tests, facilitating high-fidelity simulation activities, and utilizing learning management systems such as Canvas. Experience preparing students for success on SRTA/ADEX examinations and National Dental Hygiene Boards.

Hours of Duty: Will vary, some evenings and weekend may be required
