Grinnell College seeks applications and nominations for the Lawrence S. Pidgeon Director for its Education Professions Career Community. As a member of both the Center for Careers, Life, and Service and Education Department, , the Director will advise students and recent graduates who express interest in exploring, preparing for, and pursuing careers in teaching, school counseling, educational research, policy, administration, and other education-related professions. In leading this community, the Lawrence S. Pidgeon Director will work collaboratively with their CLS colleagues to crystalize the notion that a career encompasses a unique blend of one’s professional, civic, and personal aspirations.
The Director will be responsible for providing individual and small group career advising; planning, facilitating, and evaluating topically relevant programming and workshops (e.g., guest speakers, alumni panels, career-focused symposia); planning and leading off-campus treks and site visits; cultivating opportunities for students to explore avenues for service in the field; establishing relationships with and engaging alumni and friends of Grinnell who work in education-related careers; and promoting opportunities to engage with recruiters. The Lawrence S. Pidgeon Director will establish relationships with and engage faculty and other campus community stakeholders. Additionally, the Director will work in partnership and collaboration with the Education Department faculty and staff to plan, coordinate, and track both student teaching placements and practicum experiences for licensure-seeking students each semester.
Applicants must have a master’s degree and at least 3 years of experience in education as a PK–12 classroom teacher, in educational policy, or other education-related role. Candidates with prior PK–12 teaching experience are strongly preferred. Applicants must be interested in and committed to working with a talented, diverse, and high-achieving community of undergraduate students. Successful candidates will have prior experience leading groups, building relationships and collaborating with others, and have a strong knowledge base in seeking and securing internships, practica, and full-time positions in education-related fields as well as applying to graduate school (particularly to schools of education).
