The Dean of the School of Human Development is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive environment and culture that synthesizes the intellectual, social, emotional, and professional development of our students in a holistic way. This position provides school leadership, oversight, analysis, and communication with an emphasis on the School of Human Development. This position performs complex administrative tasks and will be under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative, independent judgment, and decision-making.
The position is located in Pasadena and reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
- Knowledge of the discipline of Human Development (HD) from organizational, societal, theoretical, environmental, cultural, and institutional perspectives.
- Serves in a leadership capacity for program chairs, faculty and students in the School.
- Develops, articulates, and presents the vision for the School in collaboration with the School Academic team. Translates this vision into strategic goals by developing an academic program assessment plan related to College mission and strategic planning objectives.
- Works collegially with academic lead administrators and core faculty to ensure collaboration and successful implementation of programs in relation to pedagogy and the mission.
- Helps establish a student culture where diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, develop their professional roles and exercise leadership.
- Provides leadership in and is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and regulations pertaining to student learning and program development consistent with the philosophy of the School and the mission of PO.
- Oversees the planning, budgeting, scheduling, personnel matters, curriculum, instruction, student appeals, and new program development
- Reviews and evaluates data and reports for existing programs at the School of Human Development and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Updates and maintains the Guidelines for the School of Human Development to align with regional accreditation rules and guidelines published by the WASC, and documents processes related to the review of new programs and program revisions.
- Develops new programs in consultation with faculty and administration; and seeks other internal and external expertise when necessary.
- Researches policy issues related to PO Guidelines, DOE, Coordinating Committee Rules, and California statutes, and initiates communication with other staff to keep them apprised of current issues.
- Prepares reports on statewide higher education planning and policy issues, makes policy recommendations, and communicates policies to higher education institutional leaders.
- Reviews and evaluates proposals and administrative changes.
- Reviews, evaluates, and makes recommendations for changes in mission statements or preliminary authority requests.
- Translates policy initiatives into committee rules and develops implementation procedures.
- Monitors, analyzes and prepares bill summaries and fiscal notes for legislation relevant to the activities of the School as assigned.
- Prepares written materials and presentations for quarterly coordinating Academic Leadership Committee meetings.
- Develops, organizes, and presents statewide, national or international workshops on issues of interest to higher education faculty and students.
- Communicates issues related to School of Human Development to the Academic Leadership Committee, Vice President of College, and other interested parties.
- Represents the School and College through public speaking engagements.
- Performs related work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of higher education philosophy and institutional missions, and of the California/WASC higher education system.
- Knowledge of PO missions, pedagogy, governance, and methods of financing.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management.
- Experienced in course sequencing and development.
- Aptitude to gathering, assembling, correlating, and analyzing data to formulate solutions to problems in collaboration with staff and faculty.
- Capacity to think analytically, analyzes data, and prepares reports.
- Ability to present professional research data, agency recommendations, and reports at workshops, seminars, committee/board meetings, hearings and other public events.
- Ability to interpret and apply guidelines, policies, procedures, rules, and statutes using sound judgment.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to a wide range of individuals.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when applying relevant policies and procedures.
- Ability to work under pressure, meets objectives, and successfully meets periodic, milestone, and final deadlines.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships both internally and externally.
- Skilled in using personal computers, general office software, statistical software, project management software, and databases.
- Doctorate preferred with at least 5-6 years’ of increasingly responsible experience in academic administration at a small, private, liberal arts college or Master's degree required with at least 7-10 years’ of increasingly responsible experience in academic administration at an accredited college or university.
- Experience monitoring and administering programs, maintaining and analyzing data, and developing presentations, reports and other documents.
- Excellent leadership and managerial skills and the capacity to supervise and lead faculty chairs, core faculty, and staff in the School of HD.
