This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before 06/30/2020, with the possibility of reappointment and/or permanency. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The department has within its scope of responsibilities the operation of the athletic medicine program and the respective facilities. This program coordinates the medical care of the varsity and selected club/recreation sports. This includes coordinating pre and post-season physical examinations, as well as in-season clinical examinations and rehabilitation; maintaining proper documentation and records; controlling bid, vendor, and supply inventory; providing educational and career guidance/supervision for athletic training students; and developing professional relationships with physicians, medical providers, physical therapists, and their respective administrations.

Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant Athletic Trainer provides athletic training services to the sport of football and men’s and women’s tennis. The emphasis of responsibilities will be split based on which sport is in its competitive season. Combined, the number of student-athletes in these two sports is approximately 130. Football, especially, is a high impact collision sport characteristic of acute and chronic injuries and some of the more complicated recovery programs as compared to other sports. The skillset required for this position is at a level for the more experienced athletic trainer as it relates to safe and effective expediency in return to play, prevention, rehabilitation, and emergency care. This position will work in conjunction with approximately 15 coaches.

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,667 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,571 - $6,691 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

Specialized Skills Required

• Compliance with all NCAA, conference, and San Diego State University rules, policies and procedures is of paramount importance to the university. All position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.
• Experience with medical supply vendors, quality, and costs.
• Excellent written and verbal skills of those of a medical professional.
• Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification.
• Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid.
• Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to Head Athletic Trainer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with football, contact sports, and/or men’s & women’s tennis at collegiate, international, and/or professional team level as a certified Athletic Trainer for two to five years beyond Bachelor’s degree, which may include a graduate assistantship.
• Proficiency with Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G.
• Additional credentials of advance study in an athletic training related subject matter. Examples are: functional evaluation/rehabilitation, instrumented or manual soft tissue mobilization, Kinesiotape, etc.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word & Excel.
• Prior experience performing inventory, budget, and insurance duties in a sports medicine environment.
