Marian University is seeking a Dean of Students. The Dean of Students serves as the primary advocate for students, reporting to the Vice President for Student Success and Engagement (VPSSE). The Dean serves as principal advisor to VPSSE in all matters concerning support of the Catholic Franciscan mission of the university; student life, campus vibrancy, student welfare, student services, and retention. This person serves as the direct supervisor of staff members in Housing and Residence Life, Student Activities, International Student services, and Dining Services. This individual will also work collaboratively with Athletics and Intramural Sports, Campus Ministry, all SSE departments and Campus Safety and Police Services.

Responsibilities:

The Dean of Students supervises and directs:

  • Director of Housing and Residence Life
  • Director of Student Activities
  • Director of Dining Services
  • Student Conduct
  • Student Advocacy
  • International Student Services

Furthermore, the Dean of Students:

  • Leads the development and effective coordination of Student Life offices, programs, services, and personnel;
  • Develops annual student engagement plans coordinating with other student services offices;
  • Consults with the VP SSE (Student Success & Engagement), and Provost on all major policies, problems, and issues that affect students;
  • Leads the interpretation and communication of the developmental needs of students to the VP SSE, the Marian University community, and the Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees;
  • Serves as a catalyst in initiating new programs and services to meet the developmental needs of Marian University students;
  • Consults with members of the staff in the annual preparation of the budget; submits budget recommendations to the VP SSE of the University and seeks the necessary funding to provide support for Student Life programs and objectives;
  • Conducts meetings with the Student Life offices, communicating information, providing a forum for new ideas, and facilitating decision making;
  • Initiates, on a regular basis, the evaluation of Student Life staff functions, objectives and performance, making recommendations to the VP SSE on promotion and salary for professional staff;
  • Provides and recommends appropriate in-service training for Student Life professional staff, paraprofessional staff, and student leaders;
  • Develops and periodically reviews all office procedures, forms, brochures, and materials used by Student Life; including the annual review and revision Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the recruitment, selection, and training of professional, paraprofessional and clerical staff for Student Life;
  • Makes recommendations to the VP SSE for the proper maintenance and improvement of student housing facilities, recreational areas, health and wellness facilities, campus dining facilities, and campus safety equipment and facilities;
  • Coordinates the student conduct system, including selecting and training individuals who serve on Marian University conduct panels and boards, as well as overseeing the appeals process;
  • Provides support for programs and research in student engagement and retention, and develops effective strategies and programs that foster student persistence in college;
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to professional growth by participating in professional development programs offered by the University, attending professional conferences and events, and being involved in local, state, and national organizations (NASPA, ACPA, ISAA, etc.);
  • Investigates sources and submits proposals for external funding support of Student Life projects, programs, and services;
  • Collaborates with Title IX colleagues as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, or related field required.
  • Terminal degree preferred.
  • This position requires a minimum of (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience, in full time college administration, preferably in Catholic higher education administration and related to some aspect of Student Affairs Administration or Student Engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations and developing engaged, multicultural communities.
  • This position requires demonstrated understanding of thriving universities and integration of best practices in student retention, student success, and legal issues in higher education.
