Position provides support for the Path to Academics, Community and Employment (PACE) program that helps meet the transitional needs for young adults with multiple intellectual, learning and developmental disabilities; assist with research and grant writing; assist with creating and executing educational workshops; assist NLU’s alumni relations department with outreach efforts; assist with administrative duties; position involves providing direct one-on-one support and training to enable the self-advocate to gain further independent living skills.

Required Qualifications

 Although students are not required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.gov, they must have either a valid Social Security Number for required IRS reporting or a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).
 Must be enrolled at NLU at least half-time for classes needed toward your degree.
 Maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Important Note: Students are only eligible to receive one NLU resource per academic year. The only exception to this policy is students who are awarded one of our institutional merit-based donor scholarships.

Responsibilities

The candidate for the Graduate Assistant position must possess the required abilities: strong existing computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint); attention to detail; ability to meet deadlines and make progress without direct supervision; professional demeanor; research skills; experience working with people with developmental disabilities - (PREFERRED); strength-based thinking able to focus on individual’s abilities and assets; good organizational skills; creative, open approach to the job; willingness to work as part of a team; flexible schedule; skilled listener; energetic and positive; CPR Training, First Aid, and Special Education Credentials Preferred.

The Graduate Assistant will support the P.A.C.E. Department. The candidate’s essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

•Assist in grant research, writing and submission for further PACE Scholarship fund
•Assist with creating and executing educational workshops
•Assist NLU’s alumni relations department with outreach efforts
•Assist P.A.C.E. students in their courses by providing group and one on support
•Provide administrative assistance
