Student Success Center. The Academic Advisor provides students with in-depth information concerning course descriptions, program requirements, prerequisites and registration procedures.

Essential Functions

•Advises and assists students in development of academic plans and class schedules.
•Reviews and performs preliminary evaluation of transfer students’ transcripts and provides early advisement for transfer students.
•Participates in SOAR (Southern’s Orientation, Advisement, and Registration) sessions including presentations, advisement, and registration.
•Assists in the resolution of individual academic problems.
•Provides advisement on academic program changes.
•Recruits students by visiting high schools; attending college nights; visiting community colleges and technological institutions.
•Welcomes prospective students by processing paperwork; talking with applicants; arranging and conducting campus tours; conducting follow-up activities such as letter writing and phone calling campaigns.
•Maintains recruiting operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.

Effective communication (verbal and written), organization and human relations skills; ability to work well in a diverse environment; proficiency with computer and Microsoft Office Applications software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; legally authorized to work in the United States; successful completion of background investigation prior to employment.

Preferred Education

Master’s Degree in Higher Education or a related field

Preferred Experience

One or more years of related higher education work experience
