Systems Support Engineering Manager

DescriptionJob Purpose: Organize and lead a small to midlevel functional team in project work leading to systems related solutions. Identify project objectives, and develop plans and manage team toward those ends within broadly defined parameters. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing performance, providing feedback, and making pay recommendations. Major Responsibilities:
  • Establish objectives and work plans based on project assignments.
  • Manage, prepare, administer and direct resources and deliverables.
  • Review and approve recommendations for the functional programs.
  • Establish priorities and direct feasibility studies and systems design and implementation.
  • Participate in development and implementation of policies that affect immediate operations.
  • Organize subordinate staff, plan and schedule activities, monitor performance and provide feedback.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Work Experience: Six to eight years job related experience.

  • Skills: This job requires a working knowledge of and skill in information technology related project and team management including planning, design, implementation and follow-up. Also required is knowledge of system infrastructure concepts and applicable system operating systems.

  • Preferred Work Experience:
  • University or public sector experience in support of research, especially including experience handling restricted data. (e.g. HIPAA, ITAR, e-PHI)
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with configuration and management of Redhat Enterprise Linux systems for research computing.
  • Ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Experience in grant writing, development projects, and collaborations with peer organizations to attract external investments and additional funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize teams in the diagnosis and resolution of technical issues of a highly complex nature, associated with large scale computer hardware and software interrelationships and dependencies.
  • Experience operating within data center environments and the ability to incorporate those properties into research computing operations.
  • Conceptual understanding of computational, networking and storage performance characteristics of research computing applications.
  • Experience with science hubs and workflows. (E.g., hubzero, galaxy)
  • Experience with virtualized computational and storage resources (e.g., OpenStack, VMware, Hyper-V, SWIFT) for academic and research hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience with data analytics platforms. (E.g., Hadoop, MapReduce, R)
  • Additional Information: Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: IT leadership and staff, campus unit management. This position typically will advise and counsel: IT leadership and staff, campus unit management. This position will supervise: systems support technical staff.
