DESCRIPTION

UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 17 academic departments (15 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions.

The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 37 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology.

The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. The diverse mix of ages, backgrounds, and talents creates a robust work environment with challenging career opportunities and a commitment to continued growth potential. We constantly seek to recruit highly motivated, technologically advanced, and deeply interested individuals who are ready to become a part of our dynamic research and educational environment.

In this role, the Image Data Analyst will be the first employee of the UC San Diego Image Data Analysis Center (IDAC). The incumbent will therefore be essential for advancing light microscopy image analysis across the entire UC San Diego campus. We are looking for an experienced data scientist who can both use commercial image processing software and design custom analysis routines using either Matlab or open-source libraries.

The Image Data Analyst will also be key in developing strategies for improving the storage and archiving of data generated in the Nikon Imaging Center and the Microscopy Core in the Center for Neurosciences. Additionally, the Image Data Analyst will collaborate with imaging users and the Halicioglu Data Science Institute to develop machine learning/neural networks for analyzing large datasets and developing new means for deepening our ability to extract data value from existing workflows.

In addition, the Image Data Analyst will conduct workshops and seminars for students, staff, and faculty to introduce topics in image processing, image analysis, data hygiene, and statistics. The incumbent should therefore have excellent working knowledge of the commonly used open-source software that is available for this purpose. This position will also contribute to grant and manuscript preparation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • A minimum of three (3+) or more years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of microscopy techniques and modalities.

  • Demonstrated ability to write bespoke image analysis routines.

  • Experienced data scientist with extensive experience in image analysis who can both use commercial image processing software and design custom analysis routines using either Matlab or open-source libraries.

  • Prior experience developing machine learning/neural networks for analyzing large datasets and developing new means for deepening the ability to extract data value from existing workflows.

  • Proven experience designing microscopy workflows to ensure that data is acquired that will be optimal for the desired downstream analysis.

  • Strong research skills at a level to evaluate alternative solutions and develop recommendations.

  • Excellent working knowledge of the commonly used open-source software in order to introduce topics of image processing, image analysis and data hygiene, and statistics to students, staff, and faculty.

  • Ability to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field of image analysis and evaluate new techniques for applying cutting-edge analysis techniques and improving image resolution and/or quantitation.
