The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC) for advancing teaching excellence and student success.
The mission of the Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; be an incubator for student academic success innovations; increase access to education on campus and beyond: and, actively promote equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services.
Through six unique but integrated hubs, the Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to enhance their teaching (inside and outside the classroom, in traditional as well as in digital teaching and learning settings); support undergraduate and graduate students to advance their success at UC San Diego and beyond; support graduate students to develop their professional development as instructors; and actively promote equity and inclusion within its organization and through its programs and services.
Digital Learning (DL) is part of the Commons and advances teaching and learning excellence and increases access to education on the campus and beyond using digital technologies. Digital Learning's goals are to:

With direction from the Commons Director of DL, and as part of the Common's DL team, the Educational Technology and Learning System (ETLS) Specialist works with faculty, instructional designers and media specialists to deploy undergraduate and graduate courses on selected Learning Management Systems (LMSs).
Provides back-end support for the development and technical creation of these courses. The ELTS Specialist applies organizational policies, procedures and objectives to implement the LMS architecture necessary to meet course content programming needs among various functions and departments.
The ELTS Specialist works with the DL team to ensure courses meet quality and accessibility standards. They help the DL team stay on the cutting-edge with regard to educational technology teaching and learning tools used in the learning management system. The ETLS Specialist will have the following primary responsibilities:
Assist with building, deploying and maintaining high quality online course content, interactive exercises, assignments, and assessments in alignment with the course's learning outcomes and the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework.
Develop and maintain multimedia materials (such as interactive tutorials, graphics, videos) for online courses in collaboration with instructors and other members of the Digital Learning team.
Keep current with accessibility issues, compatibility issues, and emerging technologies as appropriate for online learning materials and leading LMSs.

A Bachelor's Degree in educational technology, design or related field and at least two years experience with educational technologies; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Working knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
Demonstrated experience using an LMS such as Canvas for course shell creation, content editing, troubleshooting, etc.
Working knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
Proven ability to perform quality assurance (QA) including interface design and functionality tests and ability to troubleshoot systems issues and identify new educational technology solutions. Ability to evaluate new educational tools and their integration with existing system requirements.
Proficiency in analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, collaboration and negotiation skills. Ability to communicate complex messages in written form, and correspond with current or prospective customers and vendors in an accurate and professional manner.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to communicate in a professional, polite, helpful, courteous, friendly way with individuals from a wide variety of professional and cultural backgrounds.
Proven knowledge of standards, policies and best practices relating to electronic accessibility and universal design including Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
Proficiency in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the organization. Ability to prioritize time and resources to multiple processes and ongoing projects taking place simultaneously.
