Job Details

Responsible for immigration and cultural adjustment advising, SEVIS compliance, and assisting with intercultural programming. Works closely ISSS team and various campus offices and student organizations to identify and meet the needs of international students and scholars, and establish policies and procedures that help create an inclusive and supportive intercultural environment. Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) for the F Program and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J Program.
  • In individual and group format, advise a caseload of 500+ prospective and continuing international students, scholars, and dependent family members on the visa process, F/J regulations, educational concerns, and cultural adjustment.
  • Assist in planning and take an active role in all orientation and ongoing trainings for a variety of audiences (students, staff, families, etc.) on matters including (and especially) employment/entrepreneurship options; deliver the bulk of OPT workshops.
  • Process travel signatures, SEVIS record transfers, program extensions, and reinstatement applications; provides guidance on change of status procedure; authorizes and recommends students for the employment benefits appropriate for their immigration status.
  • Work with the Undergraduate Admission Offices and the Education Abroad team within the Glavin Office to assist incoming international and exchange students by reviewing financial support documentation, issuing Form I-20/Form DS-2019, providing pre-arrival information, and advising on the visa application process.
  • Provide advice and guidance to offices on campus regarding international student issues including but not limited to application processing for students seeking internships and post-graduate employment in the US; determining appropriate visa classification; overseeing document issuance, check-in and orientation for students, scholars, and program participants; and student cases involving medical/personal leaves to ensure maintenance of F-1 student status and institutional compliance.
  • Advocate on behalf of students who have pending cases with U.S. government agencies, requesting record corrections, submitting delayed application inquiries and requesting assistance from professional networks as needed.
  • Maintain records according to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) specifications for students/scholars in F-1/J-1 immigration status and their dependents.
  • Assist with SEVIS compliance through the upkeep of ISSM, and Babson's student data system, PowerCampus. Monitors changes in student records and when applicable, communicates changes through SEVIS to DHS.
  • Assists with SEVIS and ISSM testing for new versions as applicable; participates in SEVP and ISSM trainings as available.
  • Stay abreast of new technology and software capabilities to track and batch-process SEVIS records, and provide the ISSS Director with suggestions for continuous improvement in ISSS processes.
  • Represents Glavin Office/ISSS on committees/task forces and college functions as appropriate.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as needed.

Education Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education Required: Bachelor's Degree

Position Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Requirements:

  • At least 3-5 years in higher education (international student/scholar services or experience.
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or Lawful U.S. Permanent Resident to meet federal regulatory requirements for professional practice as a Designated School Official (DSO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
  • Extensive Knowledge of F-1/J-1 immigration regulations and familiarization with SEVIS; extensive knowledge of best practices in international student and scholar advising.
  • Ability to work closely with other campus offices to provide services for the international student and scholar community, and to advocate for the needs of this community.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office/Outlook.
  • Prefer experience with the ISSM system and SEVIS batch processing.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate in a cross-cultural environment with sensitivity to the diversity and complexity of international student/scholar issues and concerns.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to appropriately prioritize tasks and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Experience working in an advising capacity with student groups and individual students.
  • Team player with the ability to make independent decisions.
  • Envisions and proposes new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; takes thoughtful risks; and accepts new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.
  • Anticipates and embraces change; demonstrates willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to occasionally attend meetings and events during evenings and/or weekends

Additional Experience, Skills & Abilities:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Prefer experience working or studying abroad.
  • Prefer competency in more than one language.
  • Prefer active participation with NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
