College/Department Overview

The University of Central Oklahoma's Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) program provides services to 62 eligible participants who attend five high schools in Oklahoma City, OK (Capitol Hill, Crooked Oak, Douglass, Northeast, and Star Spencer). The services include after school tutoring; advisement and assistance in secondary/postsecondary course selection to include Advance placement and dual enrollment courses; ACT preparation workshops; information on financial aid programs, loan forgiveness, and scholarships; assistance in completing financial aid applications; entry into postsecondary education; financial/economic literacy; cultural activities, career exploration; and college visits. The program includes a six-week college-simulated summer component at UCO where students receive instruction in mathematics through pre-calculus, laboratory science, foreign language, composition, and literature.  The summer component also involves a 3 week residential session and educational field trips.

Position Overview

Instructors are responsible for providing instruction to college-bound high school students in specific tops/content area. Current needed subjects: Foreign Language, Math, English Composition, English Literature, and Reading. The Instructor will develop curriculum materials and implement a course of instruction in the specialty area which provides students with the opportunity to enhance their academic skills necessary to successfully complete high school, matriculate through a post-secondary institution and graduate.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Develop curriculum materials and implementing a course of instruction in specialty area for Upward Bound Math and Science program participants including, but not limited to Foreign Languages, Math, Reading/Language Arts, English Composition/Literature, and Sciences with a Lab for high school age students. Participate in in-service training sessions as scheduled. Evaluate and prepare report of ongoing student progress. Prepare a modified Academic Action Plan for each student detailing what knowledge the student will gain and what the end product will be. Complete student assessment forms Participate in out-of-class activities with students as agreed upon with the Director. Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others. Participate in end of program achievement awards reception.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Bachelor's degree in field related to instruction subject and at least 3+ years of relevant experience in the specific field that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Experience with inquiry-based hands-on learning experiences. Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds. Sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of a diverse population.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Background similar to program participants. Previous TRIO experience. Bilingual (Spanish) highly preferred. Certified Oklahoma High School Teacher.

Must be current UCO faculty and/or certified Oklahoma High School teacher. Ability to create a positive, safe, and fun learning environment for participants and staff. Possess strong leadership skills. Ability to effectively work with a team. Demonstrate effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Ability to implement classroom management techniques. Demonstrate flexibility and ability to think on the spot. Express a nurturing personality and be a sensitive listener.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms. Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
