Job Description Summary

The department of Modern Languages at Bentley University seeks outstanding candidates for a full-time lecturer position in Spanish who will also serve as Director of the department’s language center: the Center for Languages and International Collaboration (CLIC). The successful candidate will teach three Spanish language courses per semester and fulfill the duties of CLIC Director, described below. This is position will begin in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Candidates must demonstrate an outstanding record of teaching Spanish at the university or college level, strong written and oral communication skills in Spanish and English, and an ability to work across academic disciplines and with multiple members of the campus community (faculty, staff and students). We seek a CLIC Director who will build partnerships across campus and develop a new vision of how to grow our language center to meet the needs of the 21st century. The CLIC Director will: stay informed about innovations and trends in the field of language learning technologies; promote and disseminate to the faculty information about creative and effective uses of technology for language instruction; create partnership opportunities and co-curricular uses of the language center in ways that align with the mission of Bentley University and the department of Modern Languages; administer the operating budgets for the center; hire, train, and manage student tutors who work in the center. Resources will be provided to engage in: ongoing membership and consistent participation in professional associations related to the field of language learning technologies; presentations at professional meetings and conferences in the field.

Bentley University is a private business university located nine miles west of Boston, Massachusetts with an undergraduate student population of 4,200 and a graduate student population of 1,000. International students account for 23% of our student population, and last year we had a total of 655 students complete study abroad or internship experiences in 27 countries. The department of Modern Languages teaches Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Chinese and currently employs six full-time professors. We offer minors in all our languages and currently have over 100 total minors, with the most in Spanish (59) and Spanish for Business (14). We also offer a major in Hispanic Studies.  CLIC employs approximately 10 student tutors who service roughly 300 students each semester through one-on-one tutor sessions and group language mini-sessions.

Compensation and benefits for this position are competitive and based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This position will report to the chair of the department of Modern Languages.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates must hold an MA in Spanish or related field and have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD is preferred but not required. Experience working in a language center is also preferred but not required.
