SUMMARY:


In partnership with the Associate Vice President/Dean of Admission, Executive Director of Admission, and Associate Director of Admission, the Assistant Director of Admission for Multicultural Student Recruitment is responsible for the execution of the strategic recruitment plan to attract and enroll first year students from diverse backgrounds. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Assistant Director is also responsible for the planning and the implementation of major open houses for underrepresented groups. The Assistant Director manages the recruitment and training of student employees and volunteers who are critical in carrying out the mission of admission programs throughout the school year. As an integral member to the Office of Admission, the Assistant Director of Admission is also responsible for contributing to the overall recruitment, selection and enrollment of an academically superior and diverse class each year. Through assigned regional territories, the Assistant Director represents the University to all prospective students and families, plans, implements, and evaluates major admission activities and programs. The Assistant Director is charged with the management of a programming budget.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Project Responsibilities

  • Multicultural Recruitment (Major project area that extends throughout the admission cycle)
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director, plan, implement, and coordinate initiatives associated with the recruitment of domestic students of color and other underrepresented populations. Evaluate the effectiveness of all programming components and suggest changes to the Associate Director.
  • Meet regularly with the Associate Director of admission to collect, analyze and assess data related to the recruitment of students of color and underrepresented populations, keeping abreast of trends and noticeable changes that impact student’s progression through the application cycle.
  • Manage multicultural recruitment budget and track programming expenses.
  • Serve as the primary contact and liaison for community-based and partnership organizations including tracking and monitoring of applicants throughout the admission cycle.
  • Build and manage relationships with partner organizations to ensure student success, including mentoring current students and regular updates to partnership organizations on student progress.
  • Organize and plan travel and campus visit experiences for partnership organizations
  • Develop, implement and evaluate overnight programs for underrepresented students of color.
  • Recruit, hire and train student employees who will serve as counsel for multicultural initiatives and support Admission programming throughout the year.
  • Establish relationships with faculty and campus community partners who support students of color recruitment efforts.

Prospect Management Responsibilities

(Within an assigned region, the Assistant Director performs these duties with autonomy and independence.)

  • Research the regional geomarket using vendor provided admission analytics and national and institutional data to establish short and long-range prospect management goals and action plans for the region.
  • Develop and implement strategies and tactics to identify and expand the numbers and types of academically talented and diverse students in the assigned region.
  • Develop a recruiting plan with justifications for recruitment and yielding of prospective students. Use queries, reports, and documents in database software that facilitate recruitment activities and assess the effectiveness of those activities.
  • Manage regional territories including planning all logistical travel arrangements, budget and coordinating high school visits, regional receptions, alumni interview training, counselor workshops, and on and off-campus interviews.
  • Determine qualified prospects in the region who are most desirable to the University and who are interested in Richmond.
  • Cultivate and maintain a "directive counseling" relationship with top prospects with the goal of influencing college choice and the final decision to enroll.

General Recruitment and Admission Responsibilities

  • Represent the University to a wide and diverse audience at college fairs, high schools, during information sessions, and regional receptions (2-3 people to over 500). Deliver informational and persuasive presentations that address the educational needs of various constituencies.
  • Cultivate a “directive counseling” relationship with secondary school college counselors, independent counselors, advising organizations, and partnership groups which serve under-represented populations with the goal of encouraging top prospects to consider Richmond as a first choice.
  • Review in a holistic manner the academic and personal qualifications of candidates and prepare the application for presentation to the Admission Committee or Merit Scholarship Committee.
  • Serve on an Admission Committee, which determines decisions of admit, wait list, deny, and scholarship consideration; decisions are made independently or in cooperation with other colleagues in Admission Committee. Utilize enrollment management software to monitor admission data and decisions and to track and communicate applicant information to prospective students and families.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of and appreciation for the selective, private college admission process, the value of an undergraduate liberal arts experience, and the importance of inclusive diversity.
  • Independent self-starter who is able to make independent decisions and to achieve individual and collective goals.
  • Advanced problem-solving capabilities, creativity, and strong work ethic.
  • Comprehensive familiarity with enrollment management and other sophisticated admission analytical software or programs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, supervise, train motivate and develop student employees is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently coupled with excellent organizational and delegation skills.
  • Highest standards for accuracy.
  • Demonstrates high-level of customer service.
  • The ability to handle highly confidential information is required.
  • Persuasive oral communication skills, including excellent public speaking skills; strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various internal and external constituencies.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point required.
  • General knowledge and the management and ability to reconcile budgets is preferred.
  • Possess a valid driver's license. Ability to travel extensively.
  • Required: Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

    • A bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
    • Two to three years of either college admission, student recruitment, or the equivalent

    WORK HOURS:

    • Full-time, exempt position
    • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
    • Occasional evening and weekend work

    SALARY STRUCTURE:
    Pay Grade 5 (Hiring Range: $37,944.00 to $50,275.00 annually)
