About the UnitSummer Session at the University of Chicago welcomes over 1000 high school and undergraduate students to campus each year to participate in challenging, intensive courses that reflect the distinctive academic culture of UChicago. Summer Session combines regular undergraduate courses offered as part of Summer Quarter with a range of credit and non-credit programs designed specifically for summer participants. Summer Session continues to grow, each year adding new offerings and increasing the number of students from across the country and around the world who participate in its robust and rewarding academic programs. Summer Session serves as a center for curricular innovation, supporting both existing College students and the next generation of College students currently in high school.

Job Information

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Assistant Director of Special Programs assists in the creation and development new format and custom programs for high school and undergraduate students, and serves as an important liaison between the office and external partners both within and outside of the UChicago community. The Assistant Director helps create and support new programs, and contributes to their development and support, including program design, curriculum development, scheduling, instructional staffing, relationship building, and administrative support. Potential partners include other University of Chicago offices and organizations, Chicago-based local organizations, secondary or post-secondary educational institutions (domestic and international).

Responsibilities:

  • 40%        Contribute strongly to creation of new partnerships and program conceptualization. Support development and management of new and custom program types, including outreach and marketing to new potential partners.
  • 20%        Assist with the recruitment of instructional staff for new programs. Maintain relationships with internal, international, and community partners.
  • 20%        Provide logistical and administrative support to special programs, and contribute to creation of co-curricular programming.
  • 10%        Assist operations staff with managing the budget and day-to-day spending for new programs.
  • 10%        Support Summer Session team with responding to regular phone and email inquiries from potential partners.

  • A self-motivator able to create and meet timelines for project development. Project management experience a plus.
  • An understanding of Chicago’s urban landscape, its neighborhoods, and UChicago’s relationship to Hyde Park and its neighbors a plus but not required.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed when programs are in session.
  • Availability to travel occasionally to support partner relationships and represent Summer Session.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Master’s or other advanced degree preferred.

Experience: 

  • 5-7 years of progressively responsible administrative experience, or advanced degree plus project management or administrative experience required.
  • Experience with academic program creation, management, and evaluation required.
  • Experience working with a wide range of student clientele required.
  • Experience creating internal and external partnerships and developing stakeholder relationships required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Proficiency in PC environment
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and on-line organizational tools
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English desirable

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Office environment
  • Fast-paced environment
  • Ability to sit at a computer for 2-4 hours.
