The part-time Literacy Specialist works with elementary (grades 1st-6th) and/or secondary students (middle school and high school) attending the literacy programs at the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic. Literacy Specialists provide small group and/or individual instruction focusing on the development of proficient reading and writing strategies within a workshop approach to instruction. Literacy Specialists are responsible for planning curriculum for each instructional session informed by an understanding of literacy from a socio-cultural and socio-psycholinguistic perspective. Instruction is organized based on students’ literacy strengths and needs, and provides opportunities for students to make use of 21st century literacies. Other responsibilities include conducting initial and final assessments, communicating with parents during parent teacher conferences, and detailed record keeping of students’ files. Occasionally Literacy Specialists may work on special funded programs. Literacy Specialists work as needed depending on program enrollment trends and funding of specialty programs. For the Summer session, applicants must be available to work Monday through Friday 8:30am - 3:30pm evening and/or Monday through Thursday 5:00pm – 8:30pm. Times will vary depending upon enrollment.
Qualifications:Master’s degree in Literacy Studies, Literacy, Reading or another related field with certification as NYS Literacy Specialist grades Birth-6 and/or grades 5 to 12 required. May consider candidates with other related certifications with relevant experience. One or more years’ experience working with students with reading and writing difficulties is preferred.
Experience with formal and informal reading and writing assessments is required. Demonstrated experience with miscue analysis is preferred. Demonstrated ability to teach reading and writing, and experience with developing a reading and writing workshop. Commitment to working with a diverse population. Collaborative, organized, and detail oriented.
