Description:

Visiting Assistant Professor in twentieth-/twenty-first-century fiction for 2019-20. Expertise in global/postcolonial literatures would be especially welcome, but the successful candidate will have opportunities to teach courses on a variety of topics, possibly including film and visual culture; American literatures; women’s, gender and sexuality studies; digital humanities; eco-criticism; and creative writing.

W&L is ranked in the top twelve liberal arts institutions and English is one of the largest departments in the College. The department mentors a very active group of talented majors and creative writing minors, teaching the majority of undergraduate students in writing classes capped at 15, and literature classes capped at 20. We are committed to the development of an inclusive environment and strive to advance diverse perspectives and approaches within the department and its curriculum.

This one-year, benefit-eligible position includes six courses across two twelve-week semesters plus a four-week May term. Two of these courses will be first-year writing seminars taught within English and the Writing Program. The other four courses are in literature, including an intermediate-level course on the novel. Support for research includes conference funding as well as opportunities to present to faculty cohorts and programs on campus; teaching support is available through university-wide workshops. There are no service commitments beyond teaching and departmental orientation, although we welcome participation in department events, such as talks by visiting scholars and creative writers.

Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply. More information about our department and courses can be found here.

Qualifications:

Candidates should demonstrate a sustained commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarly research. The department seeks candidates committed to working with diverse student and community populations; applicants are encouraged to describe in their letter of application how their scholarship and teaching contribute to diverse communities. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, by the start of the appointment.

Application Instructions:

Please submit a letter of application and C.V. via Interfolio by April 22nd, 2019 (http://apply.interfolio.com/61752). Semifinalists will be contacted by early May and asked to submit a writing sample of no more than 25 pages, three recommendation letters, and optional selected syllabi and assignments.
