A lab specialist position in quantitative and structural biology is available in the lab of Stefanie Redemann in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia.
The position is available from May 1st or later, and is initially limited to one year with extension possible based on funding and performance.
The correct segregation of the genomic material during cell division is an important process, which is fundamental to life and any segregation error has severe implications for the organisms. By providing unique and novel information on the structure and function of the chromosome segregation machinery we aspire to gain a better understanding of the forces and mechanisms involved in the process of a stable and ultimately healthy cell division. Our approaches include cutting edge electron tomography, light microscopy and computational modelling.
Projects in the lab require the combination of techniques from molecular biology, light- and electron microscopy, data analysis and interpretation and has a strong focus on interdisciplinary thinking (biology, physics and computer science). We are looking for a highly motivated and organized individual with some prior experience in lab work. The candidate joining the laboratory should be able to work both independently as well as a part of a team.

Basic Research and Experiments:
- Characterization of meiotic or mitotic spindle structure and dynamics by light microscopy
- Reconstruction of complete or partial spindles by electron-tomography
- Analysis and interpretation of data, including the development of appropriate tools for such analysis.
- Generation of transgenic lines in C. elegans or Generation of mouse Oocytes with fluorescently labeled proteins by mRNA injection
Knowledge growth
- Independent literature research
- Attending weekly group seminars and journal clubs

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in cell or molecular Biology, Biophysics, or a related field by appointment start date
Experience: At least four months of laboratory experience in Cell Biology, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, or a related field is required, which may include experience as a student. The ability to work independent and in a team with a diverse group of scientists is essential. Desired skills include experience in molecular biology, genetics, image processing, and data analysis (Fiji, Amira). Analytical and critical thinking across disciplines, as well as the ability to work in independently and in a team, are important.
