The Department of Population Health and the Biomedical Data Science Hub in the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin invite applications for the position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in the area of Biostatistics. Appointment as Associate Professor requires demonstrated sustained research and teaching excellence, and sustained extramural grant support, consistent with tenure at UT-Austin.

In collaboration with a diverse set of community and University partners, the Department of Population Health is home to model initiatives to improve the overall health and well-being of the people of Travis County. Unifying themes include addressing health and health care inequities, community participation in research, and scalable data-driven systems and approaches.

The Biomedical Data Science (BDS) Hub is a forward-thinking collaborative resource for data science, including both clinical and population health biostatistics and bioinformatics, among other quantitative areas, for the Dell Medical School. The BDS Hub provides strong quantitative and methodological expertise, and develops new methodologies, critical to advancing the School’s mission. It also serves as a methodological concierge—helping investigators identify methodological needs—and taps strong connections to the rich University of Texas at Austin scholarly community to advance basic and translational science for the School.

As part of the growing BDS Hub, the successful candidate will play key methodological roles in the design, conduct, and analysis of research studies in collaboration with Dell Medical School investigators. S/he will further develop novel methods in biomedical investigation, to evaluate new models of health care, and to address complex challenges in improving population health. Foundational knowledge in biostatistical theory and method, with some experience in machine learning, will be critical to success. Areas of particular interest for methodological innovation include but are not limited to: causal inference or clinical trials, biomarker research, work with the electronic medical record, and biomedical image analysis.

A non-governing affiliate appointment in the Department of Statistics and Data Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences is expected, pending methodological interests and qualifications. Such an appointment would permit teaching, mentoring graduate (including doctoral) students, and interacting with faculty within SDS.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct, publish, and disseminate a balance of methodological and collaborative research in biomedical data science.
  • Develop and maintain an independent methodologically oriented research program which will include attracting and maintaining external funding.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development, implementation, management, and use of the Dell Medical School’s evolving collaborative health data enterprise.
  • Train graduate students and/or teach courses as needed.
  • Participate in professional, university, and community service appropriate to rank.

  • PhD (or related doctoral degree) in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a closely related quantitative area, with demonstrated potential for excellence in research.
  • Eligible for a tenure track faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the development of new methods.
  • Ability and demonstrated interest in collaborative research in public health and biomedical investigation.
  • Demonstrated excellent teaching skills.
  • Outstanding leadership skills.
