Basic Function

The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System is to provide quality instruction to students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities to help students fully develop their interests and abilities to become better people, better workers, and better citizens.

Duties and Responsibilities

Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching various courses in engineering; and engineering-related mathematical concepts and related coursework. Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning environments. All faculty members must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisers, serve on committees, and participate in curriculum development. The position is available for one academic year, with performance-based yearly contract renewals, beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year. This is an entry-level appointment with a normal teaching load of 15 credits per semester.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Engineering or related qualifying field, or a Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in engineering coursework. Must demonstrate competency to teach Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, and Computer Aided Design classes. College level teaching experience and/or relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching and/or relevant work experience using Computer Aided Design software, experience teaching in hybrid and online formats, research experience in an academic or professional setting, experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency. A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in engineering.

A preferred candidate will possess the qualifications to teach both engineering and engineering-related mathematical coursework. To qualify to teach both engineering and engineering-related mathematics, the candidate must have a Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering and at least 18 graduate credit hours of engineering-related mathematics as part of, or in addition to, the qualifying degree. Additionally, desired education background would include graduate coursework in a variety of engineering disciplines to include mechanical, civil, structural, aerospace, electrical, computer aided design, or other engineering disciplines in which the graduate level coursework covers a substantial portion of the NOVA Engineering curriculum.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ability to effectively teach engineering concepts in a classroom environment. The ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. The ability to use instructional technologies. The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes.
