POSITION: TENURE- TRACK POSITION IN AFRICAN & AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES CENTER & DIRECTOR, LEE HAGAN AFRICANA STUDIES CENTER

JOB SUMMARY: The Department of African & African-American Studies invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment as assistant, associate, or full professor commencing September 2019 to teach at New Jersey City University (NJCU) William J. Maxwell College of Arts & Sciences. This position is a dual-appointment in the African & African-American Studies and the Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful applicant will be required to teach both basic and advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, candidates will be expected to develop new programs and course offerings at the undergraduate as well as master’s level for the African & African-American Studies Department, and maintain an active and sustained research agenda in one’s respective field, with publications in peer-reviewed journals and presses. As a shared appointment in African & African-American Studies and the Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center, the finalist will have proven university leadership experience in administering an Africana Studies Center or related department. The mission of the Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center is to promote academic excellence and social responsibility among faculty, students, and the surrounding community about issues relevant to the empowerment of people across the African Diaspora. Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director of the Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center will be responsible for the following, among other duties to be determined by the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs: 1) Provide leadership in carrying out the mission, meeting the goals of the Center and creating a strategic plan in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan; 2) Conduct regular program evaluations and coordinate the Center’s objectives with the goals of the Division of Academic Affairs and the University; and 3) Develop collaborative partnerships with experts in the knowledge, practice, and policy of multiculturalism, identity, and diversity. The Director of the Center is expected to do the following as part of his/her duties and responsibilities: a) Establish, design, and implement innovative educational initiatives that will positively impact students and the University at large; b) Design and implement community outreach programs; c) Serve as a resource person for students, faculty, staff, and the community; d) Participate in Divisional and University-wide student recruitment and retention initiatives; and e) Attract external resources through planning and fundraising, working closely with the Office of University Advancement. Additionally, the finalist should have substantive executive, operational, and financial management experience with strong organizational and project management skills.

EDUCATION: Candidates should have an earned doctorate in African & African-American Studies or a related field, with a concentration or extensive work in the history of the African Diaspora, particularly Blacks in the U.S., the Caribbean, or Latin America. In very extraordinary cases, as determined by the University, the requirement of a doctorate or terminal degree may not be necessary.

EXPERIENCE: Candidates should provide evidence of excellence in teaching and an active research agenda that would involve undergraduate and graduate students at an urban comprehensive university such as NJCU.
