General Summary of Position:

The College of Education is seeking to hire an Assistant Teaching Professor in K-12 Mathematics Education. At UMass Lowell this is a full time, benefited position that carries a 3/3 course load during the academic year as well as the expectation that the applicant will provide service to the college and university community.

The College of Education is one of six academic colleges at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The College of Education (COE) contributes to the recognized success of UMass Lowell, which is ranked in the top 200 of national research universities (US News and World Report) and is one of the fastest growing universities in the country. Lowell is a mid-sized, diverse city approximately 25 miles north of Boston. It is home to the second largest Cambodian population in the country, as well as people of Ghanaian, Ugandan, Nigerian, Brazilian, and Caribbean heritage. Because of its place in the history of the industrialization of the United States, the city is home to the Lowell National Historical Park (LNHP). In collaboration with the COE, the LNHP oversees the Tsongas Industrial History Center, which brings 40,000 children annually to Lowell for place-based, experiential learning.

The COE currently serves 400 graduate students and 120 undergraduates. The College has 14 tenured or tenure track faculty and five clinical faculty. Education degrees are offered at the undergraduate and graduate level. During the last five years, the College has launched exciting new initiatives to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding student body: a Carnegie-recognized doctoral degree program for school leaders, a School Leadership Institute (professional development for current school administrators), Ph.D. degrees, a US Department of State grant-funded international education program, a new BA Ed degree with dual license in elementary and special education, a UTeach program for undergraduate STEM education, and a Center for Program Evaluation.

Through our M.Ed. degrees, the COE prepares new teachers and administrators in field-based programs, as well as higher education professionals. Additionally, the College provides cutting-edge, online masters (M.Ed.) and education specialist (Ed.S.) degrees in Curriculum & Instruction, Reading & Language, and Education Administration with Principal License. Our online programs are ranked sixteenth in the nation by US News and World Report. All licensure programs are fully approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and we hold legacy NCATE accreditation.

The COE faculty is composed of engaged and innovative scholars with diverse backgrounds who generate and apply knowledge, create programs, and collaborate with partners, guided by values of democracy, inclusion, excellence, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach and supervise undergraduates in the area of mathematics and mathematics education (BA in Education degree and UTeach Program for STEM undergraduates).
  • Deliver course instruction and advisement in face-to-face and online formats.
  • Collaborate with department faculty to deliver undergraduate programs.
  • Collaborate on proposals for grants, especially those involving mathematics education.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Mathematics Education or closely related field
  • Experience teaching mathematics in K-12 settings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least four years of experience working in K-12 mathematics education
  • Experience in some supervisory role in K-12 education
  • Interest in teaching and supervising prospective elementary teachers
  • Openness to understanding how mathematics is connected to other disciplinary areas
  • Experience or openness using digital technology in math teaching
  • Experience or openness to instructional technology
  • Experience working with student-centered elementary mathematics curricula with an emphasis on problem-based learning and inquiry
  • Some experience teaching in higher education and/or planning and delivering professional development in the field of mathematics
  • Experience teaching a range of a range of diverse learners in urban or other diverse and high-needs settings
  • Demonstrated commitment to global and local perspectives with emphasis on equity and education for social justice
  • Experience with or willingness to teach online
  • Ability to work collaboratively with department faculty and contribute to the mission of the College
