TheDalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) and its Institute of Health PolicyManagement and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto, inviteapplications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor inthe area of Health Systems and Clinical Public Health in Asia. This is a joint appointment between the DLSPH  (51%)and the IHPME (49%). The expected start date is January 1, 2020 or shortlythereafter.

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health and itsInstitute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University ofToronto are seeking a scholar with the demonstrated ability to pursue and leadresearch and training initiatives on critical healthcare systems and populationhealth questions in Asia. This position relates directly to the diverse set ofopportunities for research and training that are emerging based oncollaborations being formed with institutions in China and other countries inAsia with mandates to address the pressing needs for health professionals andhealth systems transformation. 

Candidates must have either a PhD in PublicHealth, Systems Research or a related field, or equivalent additionalcredentialing at the doctoral level in a public health related field, such asan MD, at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstratedrecord of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whoseresearch and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existingstrengths (see The successful candidatewill be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highestinternational level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, andexternally funded research program.

Candidatesmust provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record ofpublications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcomingpublications meeting high international standards, the submitted researchstatement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, andstrong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidenceof excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments,the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and theteaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strongletters of reference.

Thesuccessful applicant will have extensive knowledge of and experience inresearch in primary care, clinical epidemiology, population health, healthpolicy, control of communicable and non-communicable disease, and the use oflarge transactional and other types of data sets generated by healthcareinformation systems and/or observational cohort studies and registries toproduce evidence that has relevance to policy. Experience in interventionalstudies (e.g., quasi-experimental studies and randomized controlled trials) inprimary care settings that involve the training of health professionals andpatients is especially valued in this search. The successful applicant willdemonstrate excellence in leadership in research and training in healthcare andhealth policy with a focus on the critical sector of primary care. Thesuccessful applicant will also have the demonstrated ability to communicate withsenior academics, healthcare administrators, clinical leaders, and healthpolicy-makers in Asia.

It is expected that the successful applicantwill lead joint initiatives between the School and partners in Asia, includingacademic, government, and health services partners to establish an intellectualand practical framework for the development of new research and trainingcollaborations that will generate evidence on best practices related to primarycare and primary care systems, as well as models for training generalpractitioners that meet current needs, such as the initiative developing inChina to train 300,000 general practitioners over the coming decade. Thesuccessful applicant will also lead a pedagogical program in primary careevaluative and comparative health systems research based at the Institute andSchool including leading course design and delivery in the establishment anduse of data for decision making and the use of such data in health policy inAsian health systems. They will also lead and help deliver course design tosupport clinician education around the use of data, health services research,and clinical epidemiology, engage in graduate teaching and supervision, as wellas have the ability to develop continuing education programs in Asia.
