Dean of Academic Affairs

Summary

Oversees all academic affairs and personnel for a college with campuses in Los Angeles and Chicago. Develops academic policies and programs for college.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the college.
• Directs and supervises activities of all academic personnel.
• Oversees recruiting, onboarding, training, and evaluation of faculty.
• Oversees selection and scheduling of courses, recommends implementation or deletion of courses as appropriate.
• Oversees mapping and monitoring of curriculum, course, emphasis, and program learning outcomes.
• Conducts Institutional Effectiveness Reporting for the academic department and utilizes IER-generated data in decision making and strategic planning.
• Monitors assessment programs for maximum effectiveness and uses of data generated by assessment in analysis, decision making, faculty review/development, and strategic planning.
• Oversees program reviews and curricular updates to ensure current, relevant programs of study.
• Generates reports and conducts analysis through student information system.
• Participates as a member of the grievance committee in all student related matters.
• Deliberates on and renders final decisions on academic related grievances.
• Offers coaching, leadership and advising to Faculty and Academic Staff.
• Ensures faculty governance structures are supported and in place.
• Collaborates with all college departments as needed.
• Oversees and conducts annual faculty and academic staff reviews.
• Participates in or leads various campus committees.
• Develops and monitors the academic budget.
• Advises the President on academic matters.
• Ensures that instruction and learning resources support an outstanding educational experience for the student.
• Oversees articulation and transfer agreements.
• Maintains the operation of a consistent and effective Faculty Development Program.
• Attends student and campus events regularly, participating where appropriate.
• Contributes to marketing and recruitment efforts, including participation in open houses, field trips, college fairs, conferences, and other related events.
• Regularly visits all CCH campuses.
• Abides by and supports campus policies and procedures.
• Nurtures a positive, creative, collaborative, and welcoming campus culture.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the college's policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
• Directly or indirectly supervises all academic employees. This includes department chairs, full- and part-time faculty, registrars, librarians, academic advisors, academic coordinators, student workers, teaching assistants, and other academic personnel.
• Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and Experience

• A Master's degree is required; a doctorate is preferred;
• A minimum of 5 years' academic leadership at a regionally accredited college is required, ideally at a WASC/WSCUC accredited institution;
• Experience at a regionally accredited liberal arts college preferred;
• Some background or familiarity with the creative/fine arts and/or entertainment industry is preferable as the college offers liberal arts programs in film, visual effects, graphic design, and other areas of creative media.

History
Columbia College Hollywood was originally established in the 1952 in the MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles as a branch campus of Columbia College in Chicago. The curriculum was designed to focus on the burgeoning television and radio industries and featured a faculty made up of working television and radio professionals. In 1959, Columbia College Hollywood separated from the Chicago institution to operate as an independent, private, nonprofit college.

During the 1960s, as the entertainment industry grew and changed, the college established a cinema department with a dual focus on film and television. To serve its expanding curricula and student population, the college moved to a new campus on Las Palmas Avenue in Hollywood in 1970. In 1997, Columbia College Hollywood established its current campus in the historic, former world headquarters of Panavision, a foremost designer and manufacturer of cameras and lenses for the film and television industries. The college is now located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, providing access to major film and television studios in Los Angeles.

In 2018, Columbia College Hollywood merged with Tribeca Flashpoint College in Chicago, Illinois. As a result, a wider range of programs and services are available to students at both locations and online. The campus in Illinois is now known as Flashpoint Chicago, a campus of Columbia College Hollywood.
