Unit Description:

The University of Guam Marine Laboratory (UOGML) was founded in 1970 and serves as a major institution for marine science research in the Western Pacific and Micronesia. UOGML has a strong track record in basic and applied research in ecology, taxonomy, fisheries, and monitoring of coastal ecosystems. Recent research initiatives expanded UOGML’s capabilities in marine genomics and coastal oceanography, with an emphasis on land-sea connections, coastal development, and sustainability in the age of climate change. The UOGML is uniquely positioned to pursue the above agenda given its close proximity to some of the most diverse and unique marine environments in the world.

Character of Duties:

We are seeking an exceptional candidate with expertise in marine-mollusk and reef-coral genomics to support our new initiatives.  The candidate must be actively engaged in the following research topics: evolutionary, functional, and conservation genetics of marine invertebrates, with an emphasis on marine mollusks and reef corals.  The candidate must show a record of skills in the use and development of cutting edge laboratory technologies such as genomics and transcriptomics, as well as next generation sequencing data analyses.  The candidate must have experience working on remote islands and/or institutions, demonstrate organizational skills, and dealing with unexpected challenges particular to such remote locations.  The candidate must demonstrate experience in teaching genetics (theory, field, and lab work).  The candidate should show interest in and be engaged in improving the success of underrepresented minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and access of minorities to STEM learning opportunities, as demonstrated through prior mentoring experiences of underrepresented students.

The successful individual is expected to develop a viable and energetic externally funded research program, make collaborative contributions to university STEM-centric research programs, and may also contribute to other local and regional projects in a supporting role.  The candidate will be required to develop and teach at least one (1) graduate level course in genomics and a second graduate course of choice in a relevant field, with a total of two (2) semester-long courses being taught every four (4) semesters.  The candidate may also be requested to develop a seminar course of their own design intermittently.


Minimum: PhD in Genomics or another appropriate discipline (e.g., Genetics, Evolutionary Biology) from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent.  Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred: Postdoctoral experience; at least two (2) first-author peer-reviewed publications; experience with the University of Guam's administrative system.  Experience working with online learning programs.

Police and Court Clearance: Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment.  Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence.  Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.

Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.

Federal law requires presentation of eligibility to work in the United States within seventy-two (72) hours of reporting for employment. Specifically, 8 USC 1324A requires the employer to verify the identity and eligibility to work in the United States of all newly hired employees.
