Job Summary Requisition Number: 29878 Job Title: STAFF RESEARCH ASSOCIATE I Working Title: STAFF RESEARCH ASSOCIATE I Salary: 20.74-24.74 Job Type: Career Department Name: 0980-CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY Department Website URL: Job Summary Statement: Under the general supervision of the Director of the Instructional Laboratory Support Facility, the Staff Research Associate I will assist with experiment development/research under the guidance of the respective teaching professors, assist in curriculum development, and facilitate instructional improvement and alignment of those improvements with department learning outcomes.

This position will also perform quality control and assurance on unknowns and volumetric standard solutions, maintain supplies of stock reagents, prepare reagents needed for General and/or Organic instructional laboratories, prepare chemicals and equipment for upcoming experiments, ensure chemical and equipment preparation is completed one week before the scheduled date for an experiment, and maintain equipment instruction protocol forms for spectrophotometers, melting point apparatus, gas chromatographs, centrifuges, analytical balances, rotary evaporators, and gas cylinders. Applicant must have a degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry, with a strong background in in Organic Chemistry.

There is no clinical work associated with this position. Required Familiarity with laboratory and electronic instrumentation. Technical and scientific ability for operation, instruction, routine calibration, service maintenance and minor repair. Required Experience in handling chemicals and preparing solutions. Required Working knowledge of laboratory and occupation safety practices and procedures. Required Knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and safe laboratory practices. Knowledge of current state, federal, OSHA regulations as they apply to the assigned tasks. Knowledge of UCLA regulations is strongly preferred. Required Working knowledge of Macintosh desktop computers and common associated software, including Word, Excel and Filemaker Pro. Required Working knowledge of general chemistry laboratory techniques. Required Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey procedures in a clear concise manner. Required Knowledge of General and Organic Chemistry. Required Training in advanced analytical chemistry and/or instrumental analysis.
