I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Textile Museum at the George Washington University (GW) is searching for a highly responsible and creative Studio Technician to ensure that studios are clean, safe, stocked, and prepared for teaching and open studios. This position will be responsible for cleaning studio spaces and equipment, repairing specialized repairs and routine maintenance to school tools and equipment, and overseeing stock and inventory. This position will also be responsible for taking other steps, as necessary, to ensure day-to-day safe and healthy operation of studio spaces and materials within the studios. This position may oversee open studios – acting as a resource for students using the space and ensuring proper utilization of facilities and providing training and reinforcement for student lab technicians.

The Textile Museum was established in 1925 by collector and connoisseur George Hewitt Myers to expand public knowledge and appreciation—locally, nationally, and internationally—of the artistic merits and cultural importance of the world’s textiles through scholarship, exhibitions, and educational programs. Today, its collections of more than 20,000 textiles and related objects represent five millennia and five continents, including cultures from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The 20,000-volume Arthur D. Jenkins Library of Textile Arts is one of the world’s foremost resources for the study of textiles.

Reporting to the Director of Exhibition Production Museum Facilities, the Studio Technician is responsible for:

  • Performing a wide range of tasks in the areas of security, facilities management, collections management, special events production and audio visual presentation. Performing safety and security and incident response tasks, as required. Providing outstanding visitor service to insure total quality for all Museum events and program activities.
  • Assisting in the production and installation of continuing rotation of exhibitions. Assisting with maintaining the exhibition galleries for maximum visitor experience as well as the safety and security of objects on display. Performing production work in accordance to blueprints and artists’ drawings, to include verbal instructions and stated objectives.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
