The University Physicians Group, Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, is currently recruiting for Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Thoracic Oncology team. In this position, you will have the opportunity to work in an outpatient setting. The incumbent will facilitate the physician’s ability to manage the physician’s patient panel, provide independent care with physician oversight for established practice patients, and respond to patient medical questions in a timely manner. She/he will practice independently according to established protocols and in collaboration with physicians, delivering high quality healthcare across the lifespan of the patient.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions of the Job:

Attends outpatient clinic to provide care for patients in follow-up appointments

Has clinical expertise in diagnosing and managing a wide range of medical problems, particularly those in the disciplines of internal medicine, medical oncology, and palliative care.

Participates in the ongoing care of patients enrolled on clinical trials

Prescribes medications, supplies, home oxygen, and home health aids to patients according to clinical privileges.

Orders and follows-up appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, CT, MRI, EKG's and diagnostic procedures specified in clinical privileges.

Documents in the medical record all care provided and/or procedures performed for which the licensed Advanced Practice Provider is responsible.

Coordinates with physicians and nursing staff of related disciplines to ensure integrated patient care.

Recognizes the need and coordinates referrals to other specialist providers, when indicated. 

Communicates with inpatient medical teams for admitted patients to ensure continuity of care.

Attends interdisciplinary team meetings and tumor boards.  Informs patients of tumor board recommendations and documents in the medical record accordingly.

Communicates with referring physicians and their offices regarding patient problems/progress.

Responds to patient telephone inquiries providing appropriate counseling and management of patient problems.

Orders medications, including controlled substances and chemotherapy, as specified by the NP/PA license and as directed by the supervising physician.

Recognizes, manages, and treats toxicities of chemotherapy agents and recognizes when it is appropriate to withhold or reduce dose of previously planned chemotherapy, as directed by supervising physician.

Maintain regular telephone contact between visits with patients receiving oral chemotherapies to ensure compliance with prescription instructions and monitor for toxicity that necessitates earlier appointments.

Provides follow up health maintenance care including the appropriate adjustment of patients’ medications in accordance with established or research protocols or in response to specific instructions from the supervising physician.

Prepares and dictates summaries of patient’s initial evaluations and follow up care. 

Participates in appropriate continuing medical education.

Responds to telephone inquiries from patients.  Maintains contact with patients and physicians.  Communicates with referring physicians and their offices regarding patient problems.

Maintains working knowledge of active clinical trials, basic eligibility criteria, and identifies eligible candidates for enrollment.

Provides clinical care for patients enrolled on clinical trials.  Orders and coordinates laboratory, EKG, and imaging studies according to clinical trial protocols.

Works closely with clinical research coordinators (CRCs) to effectively manage patients on clinical trials.

Attends regular disease team specific research meeting to discuss patients who are actively enrolled on clinical trials or who may be eligible for trial screening.

Teaches and counsels patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, plan of care, anticipated outcomes, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

Develops and provides appropriate educational and instructional materials to patients.

Participates in quality improvement projects and research opportunities, when appropriate.

May be asked to provide weekend or evening Infusion Center coverage on a rotational basis.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Nurse Practitioner Degree

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of experience with clinical trials nursing, and have an understanding of clinical trial protocol design, patient accrual and randomization, and reporting of adverse events.

Licensure:

  • The incumbent must be a nurse practitioner who is licensed to practice in Virginia as a NP. Special training and/or certification in Oncology required.  

Skills:

  • Experience utilizing a personal computer and computerized scheduling.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking/bending/stooping.  Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs.  May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
