Requirements

The Research Specialist 2 is a full-time position at the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery in the Department of Neurology (CBPR). One of CBPR's research foci is brain reorganization after pediatric stroke, with a particular emphasis on language and visuo-spatial abilities. We combine detailed assessment of these abilities using neuropsychological and other behavioral testing with functional and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using GUMC's research-dedicated 3-Tesla scanner. Our research participants are children and adults who either suffered a stroke more than a year prior to study enrollment or who have no neurological conditions and serve as age-matched controls.

The position holder will assist with the day-to-day running of the Center's pediatric stroke research studies. After initial training by Catherine Chambers, a Research Specialist 4 who supervises this large research project, the position holder is expected to work independently as well as with other research staff, and to assist Chambers in training and supervising new lab members and undergraduate students who join the research project. This research involves close collaboration with investigators at sites distant from Georgetown and will thus require the position holder to work out associated logistical and administrative problems. Duties include but are not limited to:

Recruitment

• With other team members, review medical records to assess eligibility of prospective participants for research studies.
• Conduct eligibility interviews and schedule participants for study participation.
• Coordinate participant visits, including travel, hotel, parking arrangements and other logistics for visitors and other team members to their homes as necessary.
• Initiate participant reimbursements and payments of subject fees.
• Answer participants' questions via phone or email.

Participant Testing

• Administer neuropsychological tests and behavioral tasks to participants, including children and patient populations.
• Run participants (including children and patient populations) in fMRI studies at on-site imaging facility .
• Note: Requires advance training in neuropsychological testing and MR scanner certification that will be provided as part of job training.

Data Management and Analysis

• Manage and archive data in multiple formats (paper, audio & video recordings, MRI output and analysis).
• Maintain databases for storing results of behavioral tests.
• Score neuropsychological and other behavioral tests and assist with data analysis (training provided).
• Independently perform complex analyses of fMRI scanner data (training provided).
• Prepare summaries of results for publications and grant applications.
• Assist team in developing new tasks.

Training

• Train and oversee other full-time and part-time staff and students working in the lab.
• Prepare training materials.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or a related field
• 3-5 years related experience in a research setting
• Academic and working knowledge of pediatric research, or research with a neuropsychological population, experimental design, and statistical analyses
• Familiarity with Excel and data analysis software
• Able to safely work in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment, i.e. must not have a pacemaker, aneurysm clip, non-removable ferromagnetic object in or on the body, or have any other condition that would pose a safety risk
• Comfortable working with children and patient participants, including maintaining rapport and compliance during neuropsychological assessments that can be lengthy and at times frustrating for the participants
• Highly organized, reliable, and able to work independently after initial training
• Oral and written communication skills and be able to instruct and supervise undergraduate research assistants
• Interest in neuroimaging research

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree
• Experience working with children and/or patient populations
• Experience administering neuropsychological test batteries
• Experience working in a human research lab
• Experience conducting neuroimaging research
• Experience using one or more of the following software packages: Matlab, SPM, FSL, BrainVoyager, E-Prime
