The Office of Research Operations and Communications provides strategic leadership and support to the Office of Research and Innovation. The office consists of three units: Strategic Initiatives, Education and Training, and Marketing and Outreach. The Education and Training unit develops and implements education and training programs to serve the research community. Education and Training supports campus initiatives by linking educational activities directly to long term strategic goals and applies various techniques to improve the quality and relevance of education and training for the research and innovation community across NC State University. The unit works closely with all of the offices housed within Research and Innovation, including Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance (SPARCS), and partners with the Office of Contracts and Grants and all of the College/Institute/Center Research Offices.

Essential Job Duties

The Graphic Designer reports to the Associate Director of Marketing and Outreach with a dotted line to the Director of the Proposal Development Unit. The Graphic Designer will primarily work on a wide array of design tasks to support the Proposal Development Unit (PDU) team’s effort to create top-tier grant proposals. They may also work on a variety of Research and Innovation Office projects and reinforcement of the brand of the university.

Design tasks could include the creation of graphs and charts utilizing data visualization, designing PowerPoints, high-level and complex reports, web graphics and webpage layouts, UX elements and various other visuals.

The Graphic Designer must be comfortable working in a team environment and will be responsible for executing projects from concept through final production and implementation.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Departmental Required Skills

The right candidate will have a background in a broad variety of design mediums including creating innovative print collateral as a thoughtful component of digital-first marketing campaigns.

Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator)

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint and Word)

Working knowledge of WordPress environment

Knowledge of printing processes and preproduction skills to ensure print readiness

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and in teams; strong time-management and work prioritization skills necessary to manage complex, dynamic workflow

Strong portfolio of professional design work

Strong attention to detail

Positive desire to expand skills and consistently learn

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Bachelor’s degree and three years’ work experience or equivalent degree/work experience
