Departmental Accountant

Position Summary

The MSU Physiology & Pathology Departments seek a qualified departmental accountant assist in the management of laboratory service centers, a large and diverse research portfolio, and departmental accounting operations. The position serves as a primary fiscal officer for laboratory service centers as well as a principal accounting support position in the joint Physiology/Pathology departments of the Colleges of Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, and Natural Science; managing $500,000 annually in revolving activity, and assisting in the management of a research portfolio in excess of $22 million from NIH, NSF, DOD, USDA, industry, and internal sources. Position responsibilities primarily include: serving as fiscal officer for laboratory service centers, development and management of billing rates, account activity forecasting, cash management, accounts receivable management, reconciliation and reporting, purchase requisitions, cost distributions, hourly payroll management, and bookkeeping activity. Position may supervise student employees.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Accounting; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in financial statement and report preparation, general ledger accounting and budgeting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Post-award grant management and billing rate development experience highly desirable. Previous experience with MSU systems including Kuali Financial Systems, SAP Human Resources, and Business and Intelligence reporting tools; completion of Essentials of Research Administration.
