Shenandoah University is seeking qualified candidates for adjunct faculty positions in a new online Master of Public Health Program that started August 2017. Reporting directly to the Director of the Graduate Public Health programs, the successful candidate will have a strong academic background in public health teaching and experience with online or hybrid models of course design and delivery.

SU’s graduate program in public health has been designed to train students broadly in the core areas of public health, but also has a focus on rural population health, health disparities and underserved populations. This MPH program is expected to serve existing health professions students (PA, PT, OT, AT, DNP and Pharmacy), current undergraduate public health students, and practicing health professionals in both the Shenandoah Valley and the Northern Virginia regions.

Candidates with a particular strength in rural population health and/or underserved populations are strongly encouraged to apply.

We are seeking adjunct faculty who can teach online graduate courses from the following list:

  • Rural Health Systems (for summer 2019)
  • Public Health Law and Ethics (anticipated for Fall 2019)
  • Biostatistics (anticipated Spring 2019)

Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Design and deliver online MPH courses via Canvas and utilize SU’s teaching technologies (i.e. Zoom or Panopto).
  2. Design and deliver courses that meet required ASPPH competencies.
  3. Create an online classroom environment conducive for learning.
  4. Provide timely grading of assignments and provide quality feedback.

Develop and implement appropriate techniques and instruments to measure student learning, and modify teaching approach if needed.

Required Skills:

Required qualifications include an MPH from an accredited public health program; At least three years of health related work experience; One year teaching experience at the graduate level. Experience teaching courses included in SU’s MPH curriculum; Experience with online course creation and delivery; Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively; Evidence of strong writing skills.

Preferred qualifications include:

A PhD or a DrPH from an accredited public health program; Five years of health related work experience preferably in the areas of rural, health, underserved or low-income populations; Experience implementing chronic disease prevention programs; Experience working with inter-professional health teams; Experience using Canvas to deliver courses.

Shenandoah's History

Dayton, Virginia was Shenandoah’s home for 85 years. In 1875, the university was founded there as Shenandoah High School. Over the next 85 years, the institution changed names six times but always kept “Shenandoah” as part of its name. In 1946, the school nearly closed due to financial concerns. Rather than closing the school, university president Dr. Forrest S. Racey oversaw the move to Winchester. The last classes in Dayton began in the fall of 1959 with an enrollment of 159 students. Shenandoah opened its doors in Winchester in September 1960.

In Winchester, the school began to thrive and, in 1991, became Shenandoah University.
