Duties

In addition to adhering to the general faculty guidelines, as specified by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, duties will include:

•Developing and teaching undergraduate, upper-level courses in Advanced Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Ceramics, and Individual Studio.
•Working with Art students to assist them in reaching program goals and learning outcomes,
•Engaging in professional development, scholarship, and creative work appropriate for a teaching institution to maintain currency in disciplinary fields(s),
•Holding office hours and advising students,
•Participating in service, including department and university committees and activities,
•Working with business/industry/community partners in the region to develop programs and learning opportunities that respond to regional needs,
•Contributing to the University’s mission, and
•Assuming other professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of the College and Provost.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•An earned MFA in Art.
•Experience teaching at the baccalaureate level or higher, including graduate teaching experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•Experience in ceramics.
•Experience in hand building and wheel techniques.
•Proficiency in kiln work and clay making.
•Experience and interest in broad array of genres—drawing, painting, printmaking, and/or sculpture.
•Professional understanding of art theory and criticism,
•An active professional creative practice that may include a record of projects, exhibitions, and presentations, and
•The ability to address work across disciplines, as our students often push disciplinary boundaries.

University Information

Located in historic Athens, Alabama, Athens State University offers junior and senior-level coursework to community college graduates and transfer students holding sufficient credits from other institutions. The University offers sixty undergraduate and three graduate degree programs in three colleges: Arts and Sciences, Education, and Business. Fine and Performing Arts Courses are taught at the new Alabama Center for the Arts, a partnership between Athens State, Calhoun Community College, and the community of Decatur. Arts programs and classes occupy a 44,000-square-foot facility in downtown Decatur that includes state-of-the-art studios, classrooms, art gallery, black box theater, music studios, and recital hall. A majority of students are working adults who commute, and approximately 80% of students are enrolled in at least one online course. The University employs more than 350 full and part-time faculty and staff. More than ninety percent of the full-time faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences hold a terminal degree and eighty-five percent of Arts and Sciences courses are taught by full-time faculty. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Athens, Alabama is located in north Alabama, thirty miles from Huntsville and equidistant between Nashville, TN and Birmingham, AL. Athens is home to several events and festivals that have been featured as the Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” including the Athens Storytelling Festival and the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
