The Director of Human Resources will spearhead the School of Medicine (SOMed) faculty and staff start-up recruitment and onboarding, especially through the targeted period of accreditation and first-class matriculation (Summer 2022). The position will initially report to Marist College’s Vice President of Human Resources, until the hiring of the (SOMed) Dean. After the launch of the program, this position will work collaboratively with existing Marist and Health Quest HR leadership and staff to support the efforts of developing, delivering, and continuing high quality day-to-day HR services to SOMed employees. These services will include, but are not limited to: employee and labor relations, recruitment, onboarding, and retention, benefit administration, worker’s compensation, training, and HR information system management. The HR Director will serve as the first and primary point of contact relating to HR policies, procedures, and practices within the SOMed and will function as a liaison to Marist campus offices and between the human resource infrastructures of both Marist College and Health Quest. This position will additionally perform advanced human resources management work, including leading and implementing special projects and diversity initiatives, and will meet with staff to identify and resolve problems and create an environment of continued improvement.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years’ experience performing in a senior-level Human Resources generalist function, preferably in an academic, academic medicine, or health care setting, and in a start-up infrastructure-building environment. Should have demonstrated success in recruiting and training a diverse faculty, student, and staff and in building a diverse and inclusive professional environment. Candidates should have an ability to work independently but should demonstrate an ability to collaborate within an overall HR infrastructure. Must have a broad, working knowledge of HR principles and practices, including those focused on diversity/equity/inclusion, and should be able to demonstrate success in developing and effectively managing HR programs and activities in a joint venture start-up environment. Also beneficial for candidates to be familiar with accreditation standards of New York State, the Middle States Commission, and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), including the need to prioritize recruitment of a diverse faculty and staff. Successful candidates should also hold professional certification, either as a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources), or some equivalent certification in a related human resources field preferred.

Position Duties:

  • Responsible for a wide range of HR support and consulting services to School of Medicine (SOMed) administration, faculty, and staff, including but not limited to: strategic recruitment, human resource information system (HRIS) management, and employee/labor relations.Serves as project manager for larger projects ensuring appropriate planning and implementation.
  • Serves as a partner to Marist College leadership and management team, supervisors, and employees on all matters pertaining to HR, recommending solutions or changes as appropriate.Participates in departmental and College committees.
  • Collaborates with Marist College, Health Quest, and SOMed diversity leadership and staff, student affairs, and academic affairs to create diversity recruitment and retention plans for faculty, administrators, and staff, and to develop and deliver educational workshops and training programs on diversity and inclusion.
  • Works closely with other internal and external constituent groups to interpret policies, advise managers, and develop processes. Makes determinations and decisions in the most difficult or critical personnel cases. Makes recommendations to personnel, administrative programs, policies, and procedures as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge and current awareness of current trends in Human Resources with a focus on compliance, diversity/equity/inclusion, product and service development, delivery, and support, and applying key best practices and technologies.  Maintains a thorough understanding of employment regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, applicable laws, and employment legislation pertaining to all personnel matters, and various federal and state requirements through reading, classes, webinars, and/or seminars. Participates in group meetings/conferences. 
  • Designs and delivers training to build community and promote professional development.
  • Oversees audit compliance, including data collection and required filings pertinent to the School of Medicine.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The School of Medicine will seek approvals from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the New York State Education Department and Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Once fully staffed and accredited (by July 2021), the School of Medicine is expected to begin actively recruiting students, with the first class of 60 matriculating in July 2022. By 2028, that class size projects to increase to 120.
