Job Details

The University of Massachusetts-Amherst announces the search for the vice chancellor for student affairs and campus life (SACL). The University seeks an experienced and visionary student affairs professional to lead a unit focused on student success, student engagement and fully realizing the benefits of inclusive excellence in all of its programs and services.

UMass Amherst is the flagship institution for the Commonwealth, ranked #26 among the over 700 public colleges and universities included in U.S. News and World Report's annual survey. The University is a major doctoral-degree granting university with prolific research activity, global reach and a growing reputation for excellence and innovation.

Reporting directly to Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy, the vice chancellor for student affairs and campus life provides leadership, vision and strategic direction for a division that includes the following administrative units: Office of the Dean of Students; New Student Orientation; Parent Programs; Residence Life (residential education and residential facilities); Recreation Center; Center for Counseling and Psychological Health; Career Services; Multicultural Advancement and Student Success; Religious and Spiritual Life; Advocacy, Inclusion and Support; Veterans Services; Student Activities and Student Government. The University is currently in discussion to determine the optimal reporting location for Residential Life facilities, which may move to the Finance and Administration unit while continuing to maintain a close and collaborative relationship with Student Affairs and residential education, which will remain in the SACL portfolio.

The successful candidate will be a visionary, collaborative, skilled and innovative leader with exceptional administrative, financial and managerial skills along with proven experience in a dynamic and complex professional environment. The vice chancellor will have broad knowledge of current student affairs issues, particularly those with legal implications, and the ability to partner with all university constituencies including faculty, staff, students, administrators, parents and trustees. The vice chancellor will display integrity in behavior and decisions and a demonstrated commitment to advancing cultural diversity as a strategic priority. The Vice chancellor will collaborate successfully with internal and external constituencies and will represent the division and the university to the media, the public, and local and state government agencies. A Ph.D./Ed.D./J.D. and 10 years of progressively responsible and relevant leadership experience is strongly preferred and the desired appointment timeframe is summer 2019.
